Twice as many Chinese travel during New Year holiday: report
2017-01-04 08:48 | Xinhua | Editor: Gu Liping

The number of Chinese people making trips during the New Year holiday doubled from the same period a year ago, an industry report said Tuesday.

A report from Lvmama Tourism, a popular online travel agency in China, showed that during the three-day break from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2, 2017, the number of Chinese people who traveled overseas was 2.47 times the number recorded during the New Year holiday a year earlier.

Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan were among the favorite destinations, the report said.

The New Year travel rush saw an estimated 120 million trips inside China, the National Tourism Administration said.

The country's tourism sector pocketed 67.9 billion yuan (about 9.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the three-day break, according to the agency.

About 112 million trips were short-distance, due to limited time, the agency said, adding that rural and suburban trips were most popular.

A total of 26.73 million passenger trips were made on trains, and a further 2.6 million on flights, data from transportation authorities showed.

3 bln trips expected during China's holiday travel rush
Xinhua, January 12, 2017

About 2.98 billion trips are expected to be made during China's 2017 Spring Festival travel rush between Jan. 13 and Feb. 21, China's top economic planner said Thursday.

The figure represents an increase of 2.2 percent from the same period in 2016, with air travel to see the fastest growth among all transportation modes, Zhao Chenxin, spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission, said at a press conference.

The number of road trips is projected to reach 2.52 billion, a 1-percent increase from last year, while train trips are likely to top 356 million during the period, up 9.7 percent year on year, Zhao said.

More breakdown figures showed that air travel will likely top 58.3 million trips, surging 10 percent from last year, while boat trips are predicted to reach 43.5 million during the period, up 2 percent year on year, said Zhao.

Transportation authorities have been prepared for the travel peak, but snow, fog and other abnormal weather conditions in some regions will add pressure to this year's holiday travel rush, Zhao added.

The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 28 this year. The festival is the most important occasion for family reunions.

The world's most populous country kicked off its largest annual travel rush Friday, with a record number of trips expected during the Chinese New Year holiday season.

The 40-day travel frenzy from Jan. 13 to Feb. 21 is known as "Chunyun," the hectic period surrounding Chinese lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, which falls on Jan. 27 this year.

The Chinese New Year celebrations are China's most important family holiday, with hundreds of millions of people heading for their hometowns to reunite with relatives and old friends, putting huge stress on the transport system.

A record 2.978 billion trips are expected during "Chunyun" this year, up 2.2 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Up to 356 million trips are expected to be made via rail, up 9.7 percent year on year.

A total of 2.52 billion trips are expected to be made via roads and 43.5 million trips via waterways, up 1 percent and 2 percent year on year, respectively.

Trips made via air are expected to rise 10 percent year on year to 58.3 million, the ministry said.

The ministry said that more passenger trains would be added during the period to deal with the extra numbers, and ticket purchase procedures would be simplified to improve services.

China's rapidly-developing high-speed railways will help ease the holiday strain for travelers. The country boasts a high-speed rail network of more than 20,000 km, the world's largest.

Migrant workers ride home on motorcycles to save money

By Li Yan (People's Daily Online) January 13, 2017

As the Chinese New Year approaches, many Chinese migrant workers are choosing to return home via motorcycle. They say riding motorcycles costs less than buying train tickets, and they can use the money they save to buy new clothes for their children. At the same time, many acknowledge that motorcycles are a less safe transportation option than some others.
