Chinese Supercomputer Wrests Title From U.S.

My girlfriend majors in computer engineering, a rare specie.

A pretty compsci eng that doesn't have 200 nerds crawling after her? indeed a rare species. Count your lucky stars ye lowly econ major.

the cool thing about computers is that you can work on them alone at home, whereas with chemistry if you work on something alone at home you might die. so work has to be left to the workplace.

Who invented Intel Pentium processor, that runs 90 percent of all computers? Answer is Vinod Dham an INDIAN Punjabi, He is known as the "Father of the Pentium chip". He is also one of the co-inventors of non-volatile flash memory. He rose to the position of vice-president of Intel.

Who invented Hotmail ? Answer is Sabeer Bhatia an INDIAN Punjabi, Hotmail was sold to Microsoft for a reported sum of $400million on December 30, 1997 (Bhatia's 29th birthday).

How come the most smart indians are all working hard to bulid a better america?

Check online who established Yahoo, and who invented optical fibre and optical cables. They are Chinese. But we seldom mention them, because they are not our citizens, so there is not much to be proud of. The list goes on and on, and there is no winner.

japan is developing 10 pflops hpc using homegrown 2.2ghz fujitsu-SPARC64, 8 cores. the system will be online in 2012.

a chinese supercomputer powered by 16 cores godson cpus should be out around that time too..

And China is building another super-super-computer secretly, the japanese one will be out in 2014. See? Talk is really easy compared to building the supercomputer. Don't talk about the rank of the japanese computer until 2012, because it doesn't exist so far.

China has very advanced System Engineering, very close to US. I know Japan has the most advanced CPU, but no matter how advanced with your CPU, the robust System Engineering is what made machine a whole.

Both Japan and Germany made superior machine parts and accessories, but the concept of System Engineering is what make US the only country capable to build the big gadgets like Nimitz carriers, Boeing 747, F-22, etc.

I wonder who came up with the 'godson' name. It's just plain embarrassing.

It's better than bastard.

On system engineering, even the US got headache for complex system like F-22 and now F-35. It's one of the reason why they scrapped the land warrior system

If building a supercomputer is so easy, why india, the so-called IT giant, buys it instead of making it by itself? Because it is too easy and india doesn't want to waste its time? Building supercomputer is expensive, but it is definitely more expensive to buy it from foreign countries, especially when it is "easy" to build one.

it is easy to buy off-shelf...most components that go into building cluster supercomputers are bought like that...
the main problem is the architecture..you develop a good architecture...you have your teraflops and petaflops...both India and China make their supercomputers like this...
China was developing a microprocessor to power their supercomputers...is it out yet?
I am not sure about us developing one...I guess we are not even trying...otherwise there is difference only in the implementation of architecture...which is also significant for a factor.

lol

some companies founded or co-founded by chinese americans..

marvell, yahoo, youtube, ATI, nVidia, linksys, kingston, computer associates, wang labs, Ad astra rocket company, nasa jet propilsion labs, avon...etc

they don't contribute anything to china. who cares..

Yes, Chinese people don't care. But some indian friends here really care about Hotmail, and Intel, because they are "invented" by indians. That is why I show yahoo to them and tell them they should not care about hotmail and intel either, as they contribut nothing to india as you mentioned.

The only thing we need to concern is why our country cannot keep these guys, and provide them opportunities.

China Unveils Powerful, 2.5-petaflop Supercomputer

By Agam Shah, IDG News

China is unveiling a new supercomputer on Thursday that incorporates thousands of graphics chips and can reach a sustained performance of 2.5 petaflops, making it one of the fastest systems in the world.

The supercomputer was built by China's National University of Defense Technology and is "the fastest system in China and in the world today," Nvidia claimed in a press release.

Besides a sustained performance of 2.5 petaflops measured by the Linpack benchmark, it has a theoretical performance of 4.669 petaflops when all the GPUs are operational, according to an Nvidia spokesman. The benchmarks were provided by the National Supercomputing Center in China, he said.

China has been moving up the supercomputing ranks in recent years. The last Top500 list of the fastest supercomputers, issued in June, lists the Nebulae supercomputer in Shenzhen as the world's second fastest. That system also combines Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs.

The fastest supercomputer in the world according to the June list is the Jaguar system at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which can deliver 1.76 petaflops of sustained performance.

The Tianhe-1A was announced two weeks before the release of the next Top500 list, so it is too early to say if it will be the fastest system on the list.

China is looking to boost its computing resources and is doing a lot with hybrid supercomputer designs, said Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64.

A number of supercomputers have combined GPUs with CPUs to boost performance. GPUs are specialized co-processors that are faster than traditional CPUs at executing certain tasks, like those used in scientific and mathematical applications.

2009 Cray Jaguar 1.759 PFLOPS DoE-Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA
The difference between the Oak Ridge Jaguar and the Tianhe is that the Jaguar is not a hybrid...

The XT5 partition contains 18,688 compute nodes in addition to dedicated login/service nodes. Each compute node contains dual hex-core AMD Opteron 2435 (Istanbul) processors running at 2.6GHz, 16GB of DDR2-800 memory, and a SeaStar 2+ router. The resulting partition contains 224,256 processing cores, 300TB of memory, and a peak performance of 2.3 petaflop/s (2.3 quadrillion floating point operations per second).
So if Cray is willing to adapt GPUs into their supercomputers, given their long experience in this area, it will not be long before the US retake the lead.

Nvidia and Oak Ridge are already working on hybrid CPU-GPU computer clusters, and last October announced the US Dept. of Energy had kicked in funds to study the use of Nvidia Tesla GPUs in x64 clusters.
