Gunmen have attacked a military base in the Pakistani city of Karachi, killing at least 11 soldiers, officials say.

The attackers are now holding hostages, including Chinese military personnel, at the Mehran naval aviation base.

Eight hours after the incident began, blasts and gunfire were heard as security forces brought in more troops and tackled the militants.

The Pakistani Taliban says it is responsible for carrying out the attack.

"It was the revenge of martyrdom of Osama Bin Laden. It was the proof that we are still united and powerful," Ehsanullah Ehsan told Reuters news agency.

He said the attackers had enough food and ammunition to "fight and survive for three days".

The Taliban have vowed to avenge the killing of Bin Laden by US special forces on 2 May.

They have carried out several attacks since then.
BBC News - Pakistan: Militants attack Karachi naval air base

As much as I like Pakistan, this is embarassing and unacceptable. Militants were able to run into a heavily guarded military base and cause havoc; it is a clear sign of incompetence. Even worse, they were able to take Chinese advisors hostage. Pakistani military's recent performances have been abysmal. All the assistance in the world won't help them if they don't shape up.

This is unacceptable.

China has to take responsibility for the safety of its own citizens.

Intervention by PLA is necessary.

ii think the news is wrong

the news is wrong

no hostages are taken
and the operation is almost clear

Normally, when military advisors are sent, the host country is responsible for providing safety. Unfortunately in this case, Pakistan has been completely inadequate in this regard. It's not the first time either. I think it has reached a point where China should both scale back the number of people sent there and provide them with security escorts at all times.

I wouldn't be as pissed if the Chinese were taken hostage in an ambush or out around town, but a secured military base? No excuse whatsoever.

Jeez, those Taliban/Al-Queda are like weeds. Even if someone takes them out, they just keep growing back.

I have a strange feeling that this...drama won't go away for a long time, even if bin Laden is dead. Honestly, I think it would have been better if Laden was captured alive such that Al-Queda can be better fought and brought to an end. Correct me if I am wrong though.

Those Taliban have clearly lost their minds.

The Taliban won't gain anything from messing with the Chinese.

I would caution all Chinese members against jumping to conclusions merely on the basis of a BBC report. Let us wait for the dust to settle before we start to comment. Besides, BBC is a Western mouthpiece bent on manipulating information for its own benefit. Remember the kidnapping of Chinese engineers in Pakistan a few years ago? The former Chinese ambassador to Pakistan specifically said that there were external forces behind all these incidents. There are people out there who do not like to see Sino-Pakistan friendship.

Sounds like they are trying to sour China-Pak relationship.

These "terrorist" usually have ties with CIA anyway

This is not true the target was P3C aircrafts.
Latest news from Ary news is operation has ended and very soon Pakistani Navy officials will brief media.
Foreign hands are behind this attack: security officials.

if the any military advisor is taken as hostage then its our failure that we can not protect our friend but remember some external forces are trying to sabotage pak china friendship by such incidents ....................we should be united
these incident can not break the bond of friendship.............if China need some type of info or clarification then i am sure GOP will provide it
