Photo by Japan’s Kyodo News Service

Chinese state media has launched a volley against a Japanese news outlet for publishing detailed photographs of the PLA aircraft carrier being assembled in a port in Dalian, saying the move posed a grave threat to national security.

Some high-resolution photos of China’s newest aircraft carrier, still under construction, have gained widespread attention online. The photos, which clearly show details of the carrier’s structure, first appeared on the site of Japan’s Kyodo News Service. They were taken by employees of Kyodo News Service, according to a report in China NationalDefense News.

The aircraft carrier is an important weapon for China. Taking photos of the carrier is strictly forbidden. The fact that Japanese employees managed to snap photos of the ship despite heavy security is something of a wake-up call.

The report calls for the creation of an effective system to prevent confidential information leaks and improve state security education. April 15 was designated as China’s first National Security Education Day. In addition, authorities will promote education through posters, advertisements, film and even WeChat articles.

The report additionally calls for strict management of certain groups. Military fans have become a high-risk group for the leaking of confidential information. In the past, some have shared images of advanced weapons before official photos were released. Overseas military institutions and personnel have obtained significant intelligence in this way.

Apparently, no one will ever get the detailed photograph of any ship that is on dry dock ??

All the satellites roaming around the globe should be blind in that case. LOL :p:

hmm never underestimated Japan humint capabilities, they got much intel through many channel including ODA, JICA and ADB......

Japanese spy poses a serious threat to gang here which tends to post photo-shopped snaps as "leaked pics"

I don't understand. But there are a lot of Chinese new Aircraft Carrier photos roaming around the internet already. Look at this site alone. How many photos of the Chinese's new Aircraft Carrier that we have seen? It's a lot. Are we all spy? Nope. We are Chinese Military Fan. So, even when those Japanese spies are lazy, they would get the photos eventually. What they need is only open this site, take one or two good New Chinese Aircraft Carrier Photos and then give it to their superior. Viola, they have finish their dangerous mission, and deserve some medals for their "bravery"

So what? If they consider this new carrier where about is secret, then why did they show it in CCTV? This is an open secret. Everyone have already know about it. But still nobody know about the most crucial information about this ship. It's the ship system capability. Including the ship's radar performance, etc. So calm down. This ship still safe.

Its not really about the photos that where made.

Its about both the threat it poses where there something that should not have been leaked (Chinese military enthusiasts where scolded the same way) and the behavior of the Japanese employees secretly taking photos that could hurt national security and the people of China. Its thoughtless and disrespectful as a guest. If not even a provocation.

You don't need to be a spy to know about the whereabout of this ship, and the 002 (the flat deck carrier?). Even ignorant Chinese TV watcher who are not military enthusiasts already know about this ship, and the third Aircraft Carrier from Chinese TV news. So why over react about this matter? There are many thing about this ship's secret that still safe from harm. The Japanese Spy can over analyst the exterior appearance as long as they like (well, because they are paid to do it), but, it is the internal systems that truly matter, and nobody know about that.

Do you know what kind of technology that they put into 52D? No? Then good. Nobody know about 052D. It also the same, nobody know about this ship, and the next aircraft carrier.

Travelling near military dockyards in Dalian requires a Chinese ID even in non-restricted areas. The photographer could have got in without getting checked, faked their ID or there is a Chinese national who took the photograph then pass it on to the news agency.

Knowing that something exist is something different than taking and publishing probably the highest available quality of photos of it.
There is no overreaction. Can your read? It was forbidden to take photos. They still did it. They should not be at the point over overanalysing anything. Usually lcoal fans get away by deliberately blurring the interiors and open gaps or passing blurry and grainy phots of as snapshots because that is treated as uncritical. They still got the same scolding.

First a ship is not only made of internal systems and outer surface. The entire architecture of the hull and construction process can be seen over the course of construction and may or may not give away hints you want other remain uncertain about. Second sometimes during construction parts that give away more hints or insight into internal systems than you want outsiders to know become visible. Third its normal not to unclassify information simply to keep foreign nations like Japan one step behind you and part of that is a solid policy on leaks.

Some military fans gets overly excited when they see something new & wants to show the world, China can do it too.
Stop feeling the need to prove to everyone. National security shld be confidential, let the official channel unveil when the time is right. Be patience.

With the rapid advancement of technology such as big data and unmanned civil aircraft, it has become even easier to steal such secrets. In the meantime, foreign spies have started penetrating all sectors of society.

The BOLD and COLORED lines (amplifications are mine) clearly explain about China's grave concerns and why it should seriously care and respond!
