Chinese firm in bid to build Swedish railway

Published: 31 Aug 2015 13:30 GMT+02:00

A Chinese company has made an offer to build a planned Swedish high-speed railway in record time and at a much lower price than previously estimated, Swedish media has reported.

Chinese rail company China Railway Construction made the secret offer to build a planned railway between Sweden’s largest cities to the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Transport, SVT reported.

The company has offered to build the railway for 145 billion kronor ($17.11 billion), a significantly lower cost than the 170 billion kronor estimated by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).

The firm also says that the railway, which would connect Stockholm with Gothenburg and Malmö, would take just five years to build.

“They claim that they can build the entire Swedish high-speed network in just five years and it's very interesting for us,” the MP Karin Svensson-Smith Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport told SVT.

“We get to review their claims, but we see that they themselves build their own railways in their own country and in other countries with high-speed.”

The drop in price is down to the fact that the railway would be built on concrete pillars five metres above the ground, a method common in large parts of Asia, especially in China and Japan.

According to railway expert Per Corshammar, there is less financial risk for the state when building railways on bridges whereas railways built on the ground can create long unstable land sections.

Railway construction on bridges also involves less material consumption, virtually no land purchases and less expensive construction techniques.

Next week the Parliamentary Traffic Committee is set to go to China and Japan to study the countries' railways.

“Half the Committee will travel to Japan and half to China to study the high-speed and efficient movement of trains, and there will be a lot of studies on building on bridges, especially in China,” Karin Svensson-Smith said.

if china provides a huge amount of investment they may get it and also the prospect of having the project complete in 5 years is shocking and is extremely quick. which will increase its chances in success. France,Germany, Canada and japan are the other bidders.

does china have its own indigenously designed and developed high speed train?

and also who won to tender to build the HSR in Indonesia china or japan?

I'm surprised Canada is bidding. We have 0 high speed trains in Canada. Our metro subway runs maximum speed of 60 km/hr.

Currently, CHinese HSR average speed is the fastest in the world. WHat do you think about China whether she has any indigenously design? If China do not possess indigenous design HSR, how can we surpass our peers?

interesting to see it cheaper in other country but isn't (much) cheaper than the HSR the Japanese proposed

also good to know that Chinese HSR is favourited internationally. if Japan lose the HSR bid in indonesia, it'll be more than just a BIG PUNCH for them (and also to our foreign relationship with Japan)

your tone is quiet aggressive, calm down, please give me a source that shows a indigenous Chinese hsr?

this is a product from BombardierSifang joint venture in China, i have known this from our banned HSR expert AndrewJin. Bombardier has to beg China for some order, which accounts for less than 10% of the total order.

These are cool cars.

The best advantage that China has is its operational record. China has 70 percent of the operational high speed rail lines.

But in Sweden, half of the year the soil is in frigid condition. Is that a problem? Most bidders here have not yet build one before.

Canada does not have respectful population that can support HSR.
HSR is a huge investment that requires future return.
Too low population will surely get no return..

We don't have any in Canada :(

Bombardier is supplier for China D class HSR, running at 250 Kmh max
China actually combine the tech from Japan, Germany and Canada..

no you misinterpreted, Canada is bidding for this tender too.
canada builds hrs's too.

Frigid condition is not a problem at all。

China opens northernmost high-speed line

Written by Keith Barrow

CHINA launched passenger services on its most northerly high-speed line on August 17 with the start of commercial operations on the Harbin - Qiqihar line in Heilongjiang province.

The completion of the 281km line has reduced the journey time between the two cities to 1h 25min.

Construction began in July 2009 on the Yuan 36bn ($US 5.8bn) line, which has eight stations and a design speed of 250km/h, albeit with provision for 300km/h operation in the longer-term.

Construction was officially launched last week on the Jinan - Qingdao high-speed line in Shandong province. In a break with previous practice, China Railway Corporation will fund only 20% of the project, with the remaining 80% coming from local government sources.

Rather it your ignorance that Chinese has no indigenous HSR. Such info of China HSR can be easily google and you refused to do so, why? How can a copy or non indigenous HSR surpass other HSR? Copy means equal, it shall have equall speed and performance. But why it has a higher operational speed?

For example, some claim a predecessor is copy of another. Then how can the copy surpass its predecessor performance?
