Many of China's power suppliers are now Fortune 500 listed companies.

China has replaced the United States as the world's biggest generator of power and has claimed the top spot as a producer of energy through wind power.

Electricity production capacity in China reached 1.063 billion kilowatts as of the end of 2011, with power generation last year reaching 4.73 trillion kw, surpassing the figures in the US, according to China Electricity Council Chairman Liu Zhengya.

Liu said in a speech at a gathering of China's electricity industry that the nation has completed integration of all regional power grids. 220 kv power transmission lines now stretch for more than 480,000 kilometers and combined transformer capacity has reached 2.2 billion kva (kilovolt-ampere) as of the end of 2011, reported online news site news.sohu.com.

Under the policy of developing new energy resources, wind power capacity has also increased to 52.58 million kw, leading all other nations, said Liu.

Meanwhile, power companies in China have maintained steady expansion and continued business transactions in response to the nation's growing energy demand from both industries and general electricity consumption.

More energy enterprises have ascended to higher international rankings.

There are now nine Chinese power companies ranking on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's biggest companies.

Except for China Southern Power Grid Corporation, which slipped to the 152nd spot from no 149 in 2011, all eight others have climbed up the rankings.

China Huaneng Group rose to the 245th place from no 276 on revenues of US$41.481 billion, China Datang Corporation Renewable Power rose to the 369th spot (formerly 375th) with US$29.603 billion, China Huadian Corporation took the 433rd spot (from 504th) on US$25.27 billion, and China Power Investment Corporation moved up to the 451st spot (from 519th) on US$24 billion in revenue.

There were 13 mainland Chinese enterprises which made the list for the first time and nearly half of them are engaged in electricity or coal business operations from the energy sector. China Power Construction Group topped the newcomers to take the 390th place with sales revenue of US$28.286 billion.

Yet there are also signs of a slowdown in the steady growth in electricity consumption, which is one of the major indictors reflecting general economic conditions.

Although power consumption in the nation rose 4.3% to 413.6 billion kw in June from the same month of 2011, the figure represents a drop of 0.9 percentage points from the preceding quarter, according to data released by the China National Energy Administration.

For the first half of 2012, power consumption increased 5.5% from the same period of 2011, down by 0.3 percentage points from 5.8% in the first five months.

Analysts said the slowdown in economic growth in China and the high consumption base caused by certain seasonal factors in 2011 were among the factors for the slower pace of power use growth.
