As the United Nations elects a new secretary-general, Shashi Tharoor, who lost the race to Ban Ki-moon a decade ago, takes the lid off a controversial election

EDITOR’S NOTE: As the United Nations elects a new secretary general, Shashi Tharoor takes the lid off a controversial election for the UN’s top job a decade ago – when he lost to Ban Ki-moon. Tharoor, who was the UN undersecretary general for communications and public information at the time, finished second to Ban, then South Korea’s foreign minister. A charismatic career diplomat and prolific writer, Tharoor’s defeat put an end to Indians’ dream of their first UN secretary general. In India, the result was quickly dubbed China’s handiwork, yet more proof of China’s machinations to hold down India. That perception has persisted to this day. Tharoor, who returned to India after the UN election, was elected a member of parliament and became a minister. He reveals in this special piece for This Week in Asia how China promised not to oppose him, and kept its word. One veto-wielding permanent Security Council member finally did sabotage Tharoor, but it wasn’t China.

Find out who veto India. Read more.

They don't have to beg around the world for a position or UNSC seat when they brag UN is not important for them.

You do realize that you used opinions of a few people and generalized it as the bank opinion of a whole country.

No one in India had ever claimed China was responsible for Taroors defeat

Talk about knocking down a strawman and claiming victory.

It is sad that Shashi Tharoor himself had to come out and write this article, to say that China supported his candidacy and it was in fact the USA who vetoed.

Still I doubt any Indians here will believe him, because they will have a mental block at the idea of a Western country using veto against them.

lol at your pathetic chinese propaganda.

Here is an Indian media article from 2006.

what Chinese propaganda dude?
Its Shashi Tharoor himself admitting Chinese did not oppose him. It was some other P5 member.

If you say so.

However this article is written by Sashi Thoor himself.

Which again, will not convince any Indians here that it was a Western country that vetoed them. Since that is not something they can accept.
you are wrong on that one.

Our. india friends have some kind of morbidly compulsion to put the blame. on poor Chinese.

Maybe, in the future, we can create a word "Chinesemania".

Oh forget to mention, fking yankees are suffering the same psychological problem also.

Look at all of their creepy candidates of USA president.
You. can't find one single president candidate.who does not malign China.
We may call this "regalphobe".
I sincerely hope our psychologists find a way to cure them.

The rest of world is alway China China China.....
You just can't stop their addiction.
They have to cure their own delusion and ignorance themselves.

The facts of the case was known in 2006 itself, the propaganda is china talking about it in 2016.

There is no big surprise here except chinese butt hurt over LEMOA. Stop wasting my time with your idiocy.

The OP article is in Shashi Tharoor own words for the first time.

The point I am making is that many Indian posters keep blaming China for a whole range of issues such as the support for Pakistan, the 1962 war, Pakistan nuclear weapons, UNSC seat, etc But totally ignore and downplay what US does to India.

Yet China have done more to promote India like allowing India high position in the AIIB and even allowing India to join the SCO.

It shows how honorable China is.

On the other hand despite what US does to India (including treating Modi as a pariah) India even allow US to use Indian bases to target China.

Despicable.

In the Indian caste system, "Aryans" are at the top, and native Dravidians are at the bottom.

So they will never be able to accept that a Westerner has done something wrong.
