Section of aircraft carrier built last year to attract aircraft carrier contract.

The 2nd session of the 12th Liaoning Provincial People’s Congress is now being held in Shenyang. Wang Min, Liaoning Party secretary and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Congress disclosed in the morning group discussion today that construction of China’s second homegrown aircraft carrier has started at Dalian Shipyard and is expected to be completed in 6 years. In the future, China will at least have 4 aircraft carriers. In addition, the shipyard is responsible for building two new-version 052D Aegis missile destroyers.

That has been the first official disclosure ever of the construction of a China-made aircraft carrier.

However, Wang has given no information about the carrier: whether it is conventional or nuclear powered and whether there will be catapult to help taking off.

Chinese military expert Li Jie believes that the new aircraft carrier will be bigger than the Liaoning with a displacement of 70,000 to 90,000 tons. It will be a conventional one without catapult so that it will be easier to build.

He believes that China’s third aircraft carrier will be bigger to carry more aircrafts and allow the installation of a catapult.

Another expert Du Wenlong also believes that China’s first homegrown aircraft carrier will be a conventional one.

Previously CSIC (China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation) said in December 2013 that it had received two super shipbuilding contracts.

Chinese aircraft carrier programme

Since 1985, China has acquired four retired aircraft carriers for study, the Australian HMAS Melbourne and the ex-Soviet carriers Minsk, Kiev and Varyag.

China has started constructing the second of four planned aircraft carriers, a top government official said according to media reports on Saturday.

The ship is under construction in the northeastern port of Dalian and will take six years to build, the reports said quoting Wang Min, Communist Party chief for Dalian's Liaoning province.

Another two are in the pipeline, according to Wang, in a projection of power that could be seen as contradicting Beijing's long-stated policy of arming itself strictly for self-defence.

When the Liaoning went into service, Beijing and Tokyo were locked in a territorial row over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus.

The row continues to simmer, along with other sovereignty disputes with the Philippines and Vietnam.

Early this month a Japanese newspaper said China was overhauling its military structure in order to strengthen its attack capability and secure air and naval superiority in the South China and East China seas.

The Liaoning carrier conducted its maiden mission in the South China Sea in January.

It followed an incident in December in which a US warship was forced to avoid a collision with a Chinese naval vessel, prompting Washington to accuse China of being the aggressor.

Building them and effectively operating them are two different things, China has a long wait to go before they can field even 1 carrier battle group . IMHO it might take them at least 10 yrs before they develop and have in place tactic and strategies to effectively project power with these CBG.
But great going on taking the decision and starting construction.

Whats the matter of AC? They are big, slow moving targets. A hypersonic missle can easily destroy them. The lost would be huge, cause of the effort to build a single AC.

Or maybe PLA use them for study. Like to perfect the art of destroying US ACs?

Mate, its not a game of rock-paper-scissors. Carriers are the most potent force to contend with on sea and will remain the primary choice for power projection beyond ones territorial waters for quite some time to come. Hypersonic missiles if any will still take a decade or two to mature as a weapon and counter measures will keep in pace with the same.

Read this up for further info. Hypersonic missiles are not the be all and end all of anti ship weapons. The "carrier killer" tags folks use to prefix x,y,z missiles is overrated at best.

As we all know how things work in china if they say 6year it will be done in 2 - 3years.
and they believe in mass production like candy and will be a common site in all over the world oceans

An aircraft carrier needs to be done in 5-6 years, bu if we have two shipyards to build the aircraft carriers, then it might save us a lot of time.

Wrong. Dimension wise, a retired oil crude tanker will do just fine. Finally, you do not know what you are talking about, and I say that kindly.

PLAN is 40 years behind IN in operating ACCs .. PLAN will take till 2050 to learn advanced ACC basics

Oh yeah!..........the Chinese are fast learners and have been preparing for operating AC's for sometime, even to the extent of building a mock up of a carrier inland.

I agree, it will take the Chinese sometime to reach the operating skills and knowledge of operating carriers and their planes, as to the extent of the US Navy, and even the RN..............but to reach the level of the IN in being able to operate carriers, may only take a few more weeks!

No.........having Aircraft carriers remains the only way in this day and age for a country to project its forces to a far and distant target.
You can have bases abroad, but having aircraft carriers means you can mobilize your forces to any part of the globe.

I mean on a small scale the Falklands war proved this!

Yes, carriers are large targets for missiles, but where are these missiles going to come from when the ship is in the middle of an ocean?............i mean the carriers battle groups should be able to deal with them as they would of had to been launched by an enemy, who is in the envelope of the defensive screen of the carrier battle groups.

If carriers were so vulnerable............the US wouldn't be building them...........would they?...............and nor would China or India..........or come to think of it, even my own country the UK is building 2 enormous carriers. :-)

When chinese admit they are working on AC it means it more then half built already and look at your infrastructure and technology and experience in making super tanker its piece of cake.

We cannot make our own arrestors, land a plane let alone operate a carrier. The Indians are right, We Chinese are 40+ years behind them, therefore needs to give up and hang our heads in shame.
Lets see Indians build their own carrier fleets instead

Really, so you operated a relic for 36 years, it makes you an expert? The Americans commissioned the Kitty Hawk and Enterprise the same year you got your relic.

Your first real carrier is the thing that just arrived, isn't that the first carrier to even need tail hooks?

Did I mention that carrier don't even have any weapons on board?

America, UK, and France are the leaders of the pack, India is not as stupid as us, but it's not far.
