CJCSC calls on Turkish President

ISLAMABAD, March 17 (APP): Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Khalid Shameem Wynne, who is on an official visit to Turkey, called on Turkish President Abdullah Gull on Thursday. General Wynne apprised President Abdullah Gull about the ongoing efforts of Pakistan in fighting the menace of terrorism, said an ISPR press release. He also conveyed Pakistan’s gratitude for Turkish support to the flood-hit people. Turkey shares convergent perception about the emerging global and regional geo-strategic environment and desires to further strengthen the relationship through bilateral exchanges.

The CJCSC also visited Turkish General Staff Headquarters where he was received by Commander of Turkish Armed Forces General Isik Kosaner. A smartly turned-out Tri Service guard of honour presented him salute.
The CJCSC and his Turkish counterpart discussed matters of mutual interest and reiterated strengthening of military cooperation between the two countries.

Later, he met with Vecdi Gonul, Turkish Minister of Defence, and discussed issues of bilateral and regional interest.
Earlier, General Wynne visited Anitkabir, Ataturk’s Mausoleum to pay homage to the Great Turkish Leader and founder of modern Turkey.

General Wynne cancels visit to US

ISLAMABAD: General Khalid Shameem Wynne, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, on Friday cancelled a scheduled visit to the United States, a military official said.

Alluding to the fallout from a unilateral US commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on May 2, the senior official told AFP the visit had been cancelled “in view of the prevailing environment”.

“General Khalid Shameem Wynne contacted his counterpart in the US, Admiral Mike Mullen, and informed him about the cancellation of his visit to the US that was scheduled from May 22 to 27,” the official said.

The Pakistani official told AFP that the visit to the United States had been at the invitation of Mullen and was scheduled a couple of months ago.

Wynne informed Mullen by telephone that he would not be coming, the official added, but declined to give any further details.

Under growing domestic pressure to punish Washington for the Bin Laden raid, the government said Thursday it would review counter-terrorism cooperation with the United States.

It was unclear if the move was intended as a threat, but it showed the extent of the task facing US Senator John Kerry as he prepares to embark on a mission to shore up badly strained ties with Washington’s fractious ally.

We have to first accurately analyse this coming paradigm and thereafter, if required, adjust our policies to meet the likely challenges. Hi guys, need to know the true nature of the role of Chairman Joint Chief of Staff. Is it only a slot to be filled-up to keep someone happy with no material participative role in overlooking & coordinating the three services.

Do excuse me for such ignorance.

Thanks

CJCSC has no real power over military business which is concentrated in the chiefs of the armed forces, and mainly the army chief (COAS).

CJCSC is mainly responsible for administrative duties of coordination between the armed forces and has some responsibility for the defence industries, the nuclear issue (member of NCA), and ISI (administratively connected to the Joint Staff HQ).

So far, all attempts to strengthen CJCSC failed as COAS and his colleagues are reluctant to give away parts of their authority.
