Pakistan condemned on Sunday the killing of a top insurgent and the deaths of 16 Kashmiri protesters in clashes with security forces as fresh waves of violence triggered fears of a resurgence in militancy in the troubled state.

In a statement, Islamabad called the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani “deplorable”, a day after tens of thousands of people showed up at the funeral of the 21-year-old and chanted slogans against the army, police and government.

“Such acts are a violation of fundamental human rights of Kashmiris and can not deter the people of Jammu and Kashmir from their demand for the realisation of the right to self determination,” the Pakistan press release read.

Wani – the face of militancy in the Valley in the past five years -- was wrapped in a Pakistani flag as many militants reportedly showed up at the funeral.

Pakistan also criticised India for detaining top separatist leaders, calling upon India to fulfil its “human rights obligations as well as its commitments under the United Nations Security Council Resolutions”.

Ties between the two countries have been on a roller-coaster ride in recent years, especially on the tricky question of involving separatists in talks over the Kashmir dispute.

In its statement, Pakistan again called for a “fair and impartial” plebiscite under the UN – a stand that India has repeatedly rejected over the years.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Sunday condemned what it termed the 'extra-judicial' killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani by government forces in India-held Kashmir (IHK) as the death toll from clashes between Indian troops and protesters in the region rose to 15.

Wani, the Hizbul Mujahideen chief of operations, was killed in fighting on Friday after Indian troops, acting on a tip, cordoned a forested village in the southern Kashmir's Kokernag area, said Police Director-General K. Rajendra.

Two other members of Wani's group were also killed in the gun battle.

"The extra-judicial killing of Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani and scores of other innocent Kashmiris is deplorable and condemnable," Foreign Office Spokesman Nafees Zakaria said.

The FO spokesman added that "such acts are a violation of the fundamental human rights of Kashmiris and can not deter the people of Jammu and Kashmir from their demand for the realisation of the right to self determination".

In his early 20s, Wani, had become the iconic face of militancy in Kashmir over the last five years. The son of a school headmaster, he regularly posted video messages online dressed in military fatigues and invited young men to join the movement against Indian rule.

Indian authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in most parts of Kashmir after Wani was killed, but massive protests continued despite attempts to suppress violence.

More than 100 civilians have so far been injured in clashes with Indian troops, who used live ammunition, pellet guns and tear gas to try and control the angry crowds, police said.

Nafees Zakaria also expressed Pakistan's concerns over the detention of Kashmiri leadership in IHK and called upon the Indian government to fulfil its human rights obligations as well as its commitments under United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

Pakistan reiterates that the resolution of the Kashmir dispute is only possible through the realisation of the right to self-determination of the people of Kashmir, as per UNSC resolutions, through a fair and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices, the FO spokesman said.

Why was he killed? On what charges was it necessary to carry out a strike resulting in his death?He could've been detained ,Pakistan even has setup Military courts to trial Terrorists and India Worlds biggest democracy is a Joke fails to provide any legal rights to the people of kashmir.
The right to express their opinions and differences for a Separate state.

India has occupied kashmir since 1947 why is it even necessary to keep a whole state Occupied.Damn

Then what was Zarb e azb? Weren't Pakistanis killing their own who were going against the state? In last one year Pakistani forces killed 10000 of their own in Zarb e azb operations. Burhan was becoming a serious threat to Indian state not only because he was killing others but also because he was attracting others to fight against the state.

Anyway, what did Burhan expected? If he fires on security forces, security forces will retaliate. It was unfortunate that he was killed, after all he was one of us. I would have prefered him to surrendered.

You forgot that Kashmir is a disputed territory where as per UN right of self determination should be given, which India accepted because you took the matter to UN, now you are running away from giving that right to Kashmiris. Kashmiris have right to fight occupation of India, they are not terrorist.

Kashmiris have right to fight occupation of India, they are not terrorist.

No it isn't. It was a lie propagated by Indian media few years ago. There is no document or online link from UN itself that says Kashmir is removed from list of disputed territory.
