The defence ministers of Botswana and South Korea signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to "establish on an institutional basis further development of defence co-operation between the two countries", the South Korean Ministry of National Defense announced on 18 January.
It provided no further details of the defence co-operation outlined by the MOU.
Botswana has shown interest in acquiring Korea Aerospace Industries T-50 or FA-50 jets to replace its ageing Canadair CF-5C/D fighters, but this acquisition looked doubtful when Sweden confirmed in 2016 that the African country is negotiating to buy around eight surplus Saab JAS 39C/D Gripen multirole fighters.
