Bangladesh to fortify its southeastern frontier

AGARTALA: In view of the challenges it is facing in terms of the global security scenario, Bangladesh will for the first time deploy its border guarding force, Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), to keep a vigil on its southeastern frontier bordering Myanmar and the Indian states of Tripura and Mizoram, additional director general of BGB (South East Region) Md Habibul Karim said.
Karim, along with 18 other BGB officials, arrived here last week for a four-day border co-ordination conference. Addressing a joint press conference with BSF IG, Meghalaya Frontier, PK Dubey at the BSF, Tripura Frontier headquarters here, Karim said that for the past 40 years, BGB had not been posted along the country's southeast frontier.
"With the changing face of challenges, the global security scenario and growing threats, the Bangladesh government has decided to construct 50 more border outposts (BOPs) along the India-Bangladesh border and 17 BOPs along Myanmar-Bangladesh border soon," Karim said.
Reiterating the absence of ISIS or ISI on Bangladesh soil despite the recent growth of terror activities by fundamentalist groups in the country, Karim said, "The Bangladesh government is capable of handling both internal and external forces. The recent crackdown on fundamentalists and anti-nationalist forces shows the Bangladesh government is determined to uproot such terrorism."
