Dhaka, Dec 22 (bdnews24.com)––Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday called for reducing the trade deficit between Bangladesh and Thailand.

"We need to work together with the private sector to strengthen our trade ties for mutual gain," Hasina said while addressing the luncheon meeting in honour of the visiting Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at Sonargaon Hotel.

Hasina said bilateral trade between the two countries would get a boost if duty free access of products could be ensured.

According to the Bangladesh Bank, the trade gap between Bangladesh and Thailand was around $ 830 million in 2011-12 fiscal. Bangladesh imported goods worth about $880 million from Thailand and exported products valued $51.4 million during the period.

Addressing the programme, Hasina termed Bangladesh as an' ideal place' for investment in South Asia and sought more Thai investment, especially in infrastructure development, food processing, power generation, and oil and gas exploration sectors

"With over 150 million population and a steady annual growth rate of 6.5 percent, Bangladesh is ready for Thai investment," she said.

Hasina stressed that Thailand occupied a very special place in Bangladesh's foreign policy.

She said: "I believe enormous opportunities exist for greater collaboration in the areas of trade and investments, agriculture, energy, tourism, culture and education, science and technology, ICT, and security. We need to tap these exciting real potentials."

The Prime Minister pointed out that the unique situation of Bangladesh and Thailand made them some kind of a natural bridge between South and South-east Asia.

Hasina said that the enhanced connectivity through road and sea links between Bangladesh and Thailand would not only benefit the two countries and their peoples, but also the entire region.

"We need also to expand air links connecting cities other than Dhaka and Bangkok, starting with resuption of the Chiangmai-Chittagong flight," she said.

Hasina told Shinawatra that her visit would provided a new momentum to the existing friendly relations and ushered in a new era of engagement, cooperation and partnership between the two countries.

"Your visit will further deepen the existing engagement and collaboration between our two countries," she said

Shinawatra arrived in Dhaka on Friday evening with a 108- member delegation on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh.

Earlier in the day, the two countries signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to expand bilateral relations in agriculture and promote bilateral consultation to strengthen relations between them.

The Thai Prime Minister left Dhaka for Bangkok in the afternoon.

The 44-year old Yingluck Shinawatra , sister of former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra , was elected the first female Prime Minister of Thailand in the 2011 General Election.
