The best advantage of 105mm high velocity. In 2ww they could penetrate tanks.
But today's modern HE -AP 120mm mortar Ammos are able to penetrate all armoured vehicles.

What would you prefer:105mm howitzer or 120mm mortar?

I would prefer 120mm mortar.
Because Cheaper and lighter -smaller ammo.
Indirect fire capability.
Low velocity so light materials.
Accuracy.
7km range as same as 105mm howitzer.

If you want to shoot over a hill, or target someone on the backside slope of the hill, the mortar with its high arc is ideal. But you'll need artillery to get at targets over 15km away.

105mm cant shot over15km.
Only 155mm howitzer can reach range over 15km.

But My question was about 105mm artilery or120mm mortar!

The M119A1 (105mm) fires all standard Nato semi-fixed ammunition as well as special rocket-assisted projectiles, including:

  • M1 high explosive
  • M314 illuminating
  • M60/M60A2 smoke cartridge
  • M913 HERA range: 19.5 km
  • M760 HE range: 14.5 km
  • M1130A1 HE PFF BB range: 17 km

The M119 is lighter and has a more rapid rate of fire than its predecessor, the M102. The maximum rate of fire is six rounds per minute for the first two minutes. The sustained rate of fire is three rounds per minute for 30 minutes. It has a standard firing range of 14,000m and a maximum range of 19,500m can be achieved with rocket-assisted shells

M913 HERA and others are not ordinary shell. They are very expensive and completed. However 19km range is not totally long.

155mm ordinary shells have 2 times longer range than 105mm.

120 mm mortars and 155mm howitzers are enough .
105mm artillery is not needed. 120mm mortar round as mortal as 105mm artilery round. 120mm mortar round more compact , lighter, less recoill and cheaper.

It depends what you want to destroy and where is it.
Troops from pretty short range- go for the 120mm mortar round.
105mm is against buildings and fortified bases.
Recoil doesn't really matter.

Dear members !
@Penguin
I have a question:)

Why artillery rockets require or need minimum range?
Why do they have limited minimum range?
For example 107mm artillery rocket minimum range 600m maximum 10000meters.
What if we use in 600meter range?
What if we shot building or something from 200meter or 100meter?

Hydra rockets also have minimum range. I can't understand why ?
If we in the armoured personal carrier and fire from APC , blast won't affect us.

Thx .

For example from this vehicles.

Why we cant shot aims from 50 meter?

Artillery rockets are typically not intended as direct fire weapons. Their rounds follow a ballistic trajectory.

Thanks for your information but it's not answer:)

Angel of fire increases range.
Who wants shot further ranges he must calculate angle.

But my question is different:)

What if we shot from 50meters on wall or building by hydra rocket or 107mm art rocket?

Another example grad rokets they have also 1000 meter minimum range.
What if 122mm grad shot buildings on 200meters?
Rocket warhead detonation mechanism wouldn't fire?
