A USD44 million order for the RBS 70 NG short-range air defence (SHORAD) system, announced by Sweden's Saab-Bofors in late September without disclosing the customer, is from Argentina, sources close to the Argentine Ministry of Defence toldIHS Jane's .

The Argentine Navy Marine Infantry has had RBS 70 launchers since 1990s and procured new Bolide (an upgraded, faster version of the Mk 2) missiles a few years ago, and current plans are meant to standardise all three military services with the more advanced RBS 70 NG.

According to the sources, a key consideration in favour of procuring the RBS 70, under study since 2013, is Argentina's lack of aircraft for air defence and interception after the last Mirage aircraft were retired in 2015.

The RBS 70 is a Short-range Air Defense (SHORAD) laser guided missile system. The BOLIDE missile is an RBS 70 Mk 2 upgrade that is faster (Mach 2 vs Mach 1.6), longer range (up to 8 km versus 5-6km) and capable of reaching higher altitude (5 km versus 3 km).
