The Alfa semi-automatic rifle was developed by Kalashnikov USA company. It is a US-based subsidiary of the Russian Kalashnikov Concern and official importer of the Kalashnikov Concern products to the United States. This weapon was reportedly designed by a group of Israeli engineers. It is named after the Russian Alfa special forces team. It was planned that production of the Alfa will be established in the United States in order to overcome sanctions imposed on the Kalashnikov Concern. The Alfa semi-automatic rifle is aimed at civilian customers. A pre-production prototype of this weapon was first publicly revealed in 2016. However as of 2017 this rifle is not yet available for sales.

This weapon uses proven Kalashnikov internal design but has updated external appearance. It is a gas-operated weapon, chambered for a 7.62x39 mm ammunition. The Alfa is a semi-automatic only weapon. Hence it is a civilian weapon, rather than a military rifle. Though its version with an added full-auto mode can be easily developed and produced, as only minor modifications are needed.

The Alfa is manufactured to tighter tolerances comparing with other Kalashnikov weapons. All of the parts that were previously cast, are now CNC manufactured. The Alfa is claimed to have the same reliability as other AK assault rifles.

Significant attention was paid to ergonomics of this weapon. An ambidextrous safety switch is conveniently located over the pistol grip and is operated by a thumb. It is much more comfortable to operate than a traditional AK-style safety lever. A charging handle is ambidextrous and can be installed from either side of the weapon. Though ejection of spent cases is to the right side only. So despite all improvements this weapon is not ambidextrous.

This semi-automatic rifle is simple to operate and easy to maintain.

The Alfa is fed from 30-round magazines, made from polymer materials. The magazines have windows, that allow to see how many rounds are left. This weapon is compatible with standardAK-47 and AKM magazines. Magazine release switch has been redesigned.

This weapon has a side-folding buttstock. The buttstock is aligned in one line with a barrel. This feature improves firing accuracy of the weapon. The buttstock is adjustable for length and has adjustable cheek. Furthermore the weapon comes with different buttpads, and different straps for the pistol grip. So it can be tailored depending on the shooter's preference.

The Alfa has a full-length Picatinny-type scope rail. It comes as standard with flip-up iron sights. However this weapon can be fitted with various red dot sights or night vision scopes. Range of effective fire is around 500 meters.

There are Picatinny-type accessory rails on the foregrip. These can be used to mount add-on accessories, such as tactical flashlights, laser pointers, vertical grips, bipods and so on.
