Agni -3 to be tested very soon

New Delhi, Feb 14: The nuclear-capable Agni-III missile with a range of 3000 km will be test fired "very soon" as defence scientists have rectified a fault in its heat shield, DRDO chief M Natrajan said today.

Tracing the failure of the missile's first test last year to a defective heat shield which had been unable to withstand the heat generated due to friction during the flight, Natarajan said, "This has now been rectified.

"We have now come up with a flexible heat shield. All other parameters of the missile would remain the same," he told newsmen on the sidelines of a function to confer the Defence Minister's Awards for Excellence.

Without going into the specifics of the schedule of the new test flight, Natarajan said he had left it to the project scientists and engineers.

"It may be in May or June or even earlier," he said.

Natarajan, who is also the Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, said DRDO may carry out the second test of its interceptor missile prior to test firing of Agni III. (Agencies)

I believe the program has assumed significant importance after the Chinese Anti Satellite test

NEW DELHI: China gave a "suo motu" briefing on its recent anti-satellite missile test during Chinese foreign minister Li Zhaoxing's official visit here on Tuesday. The briefing was part of the delegation level talks between the two sides, which reviewed bilateral relations.

According to Indian ambassador to China Nirupama Rao the Chinese reiterated their opposition to the weaponisation of outer space, instead describing the satellite test as a "technological and scientific development".

India maintained its opposition to the weaponisation of outer space but remains wary of Chinese intentions. The Chinese briefing also came as Beijing renewed its call for a new international space treaty on weapons in space, saying in fact that their ASAT test would not be repeated.

A hotline between the two foreign ministers and setting in place of a timetable for opening of consulates took up most of the two-and-a-half hour discussions, which included a 45-minute "restricted" session between Pranab Mukherjee and Li Zhaoxing.

The special representatives have been asked to "further intensify" the boundary negotiations which are really going nowhere.

We NEED Agni III.
Only then will China have considerable anguish over Indian missiles. Presently Agni II which is currently undergoing mass production, cannot reach a majority of China. With Agni III that will change dramatically and is sure to give our Chinese bretheren some sleepless nights!

Agni- II reaches MAJORity of China, but it doesnt reach the most vital part of China Hong Kong and Shanghai

doubt that a agni 3 missile is really going to cause china any sleepless nights even if it does reach the whole of china and beyond.

I agree, China already has the ability to strike anywhere in India while India is still chasing that capacity.

If Russian and US missiles didn't scare China whats so special about Indian missiles? ;)

Yes, that is true.

Actually, China is very concerned about these, but thats not the point.
The point is India would then have a formidable defence in its missile arsenal against China. China knows as of now that India would hesitate to goto war against China, even in ccase of a Chinese aggression. The Agni III would act as a good detterent against China. The best defence is offence. The fact that we WOULD be able to cover the entire landmass of China would be a very important thing. Its a capability that we lack right now. It would have a powerful impact on China.

There is a huge difference b/w Russian/American and Indian missiles. The difference is of a country. China has not fought a war with Russia, and neither does China have a HUGE dispute over the border with currently. The border with China has to be physically manned, so i'l say its a very very important development from the Chinese POV.

yep thats always been the trend, india makes the first aggressive move and then pakistan unleashes its equivilant.

There is nothing new that Agni-3 achieves vis a vis Pakistan

That doesn't matter. What matters to the government is that we shall NEVER stay behind against India with any of the counter measurements.

That is quite stupid, You make a missile of that range, You will have problems with Israeli's

We don't have the ambition to make ballistic missiles that can reach half the planet but covering all of India including Andaman Ils. is what is being done.

Once we get that range Israel will automatically be covered. I don't see any problems there coz we've never threatened to wipe out Israel out of the map.

US knows that our missile arsenal is India specific, it will never be pointed towards Israel.
