A multi-national capstone exercise titled ‘Exercise Shanti Doot-3’ kicks off at Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) in Gazipur Thursday.

Shanti Doot-3 is an exercise on peace support operation hosted by Bangladesh and sponsored by United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) under Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) programme.

GPOI is a G8 nations’ initiative to increase peace support operations capabilities world-wide to meet the unprecedented need for peacekeepers.

The exercise will feature two broad aspects, Field Training Exercise (FTX) and Staff Exercise (STAFFEX). The exercise is designed to train defense personnel of Bangladesh and several other nations around the world.

Over 1000 participants from 16 different countries across the globe namely Bangladesh, Brunei, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, USA and Vietnam are taking part at the exercise.

Bangladesh Army, in combination with USPACOM will conduct the exercise and Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) has been chosen as the venue for the exercises scheduled from 01 March to 21 March 2012.

In 2002 and 2008 Multi-national Peace Support Operation Exercises titled ‘Exercise Shanti Doot -1 and Exercise Shanti Doot -2 respectively were also conducted at BIPSOT.

The Exercise Shanti Doot-3 is aimed at ensuring tactical proficiency and technical competence of leaders and soldiers for supporting a unit’s Mission Essential Tasks List in a UN peacekeeping mission.

The goals and objectives of this exercise are to increase participants’ interoperability and peacekeeping skills prior to deployment in UN missions.

This exercise is focused on preparing militaries from many countries to participate in United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world. The name of the exercise is chosen from the Bengali word ‘Shantidoot’ which means “Ambassador of Peace”.

The exercise will commence with an opening ceremony on 8 March 2012 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the Chief Guest and will declare the opening of the exercise with a colourful gathering at Rajendrapur Cantonment.

After two weeks of training the exercise will be declared closed on 21 March by Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique, rcds, psc (Retd), the Hon’ble Adviser on Security and Defence Matters to the Hon’ble Prime Minister.

The opening ceremony is expected to be witnessed by a host of guests from home and abroad. Senior civil and military officials and distinguished citizens from Bangladesh will also grace the event.

HE Dan Mozena, the US Ambassador to Bangladesh along with Dr James A Schear, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Partnership Strategy and Stability Operation and Lieutenant General Francis Wiercinski, Commanding General, US Army Pacific will be present during the opening ceremony. Eminent journalists, military analysts and educationist will also attend the ceremony.

The purpose of organizing Exercise Shanti Doot-3 is to enhance peacekeeping capability of the participating Armies of the world. The training conducted for FTX will be based on various lane training and STAFFEX will be computer-assisted simulated Staff Planning Exercise.

FTX will be conducted to train the platoons on the basic skills of various tactical actions that they are likely to confront when conducting peacekeeping operations around the world. STAFFEX will be conducted to train the officers on staff skills required by military officers to operate in UN Headquarters in peacekeeping missions.

The training will be facilitated by instructors with extensive peacekeeping training experience. Brigadier General Abul Basher Imamuzzaman, ndc, psc, Commandant, BIPSOT will act as the Director of EXERCISE SHANTI DOOT-3. Besides, representatives from various UN and international agencies will also come to observe the exercise.

Presently, Bangladesh is one of the leading troops contributing country in UN mission. This has been possible due to the quality training they receive on UN Peace Support Operations at BIPSOT. The outcome of this mega event will definitely enrich BIPSOT to contribute more in promoting peace in the world.

Exercise Shanti Doot-3 will be a remarkable footstep for Bangladesh Army in international arena. It is yet another unique opportunity to showcase Bangladesh Army in Peacekeeping world.

Exercise Shanti Doot-3 will leave a long lasting impression of international cooperation of training together in the minds of all participants.

15 countries are taking part in this exercise, this will only increase our military's reputation in the world.

I really hope that after this, US invites us for desert warfare training as most of our peacekeeping areas are in deserts

Well we conduct jungle warfare, riverine warfare training every now and then. But desert warfare is something that we are not familier with.

I am not saying have our whole armed forces be trained in desert warfare, just a medium sized group so that they become familier with the conditions they might face during peacekeeping in countries like sudan

Our navy isnt a green water navy, thus we cant sail all the way over there to fight pirates. Furthermore, there isnt much economic incentive fighting the pirates.
