KOLKATA: Rifle Factory Ishapore (RFI) handed over the first Ghaatak rifle to the director general of Kerala Police on Monday at the factory premises in North 24-Parganas. The 7.62 x 39 mm assault rifle has been developed by the factory indigenously for use by thedefense, central paramilitary and state police forces. The rifle can fire in single and automatic modes and its magazine has a capacity of 30 rounds. Its rate of fire is 600 rounds per minute and effective range is 300 metres.

"On Monday, RFI general manager Ratneshwar Varma handed over the weapon to Rajesh Dewan, DG, Kerala Police in the presence of other senior officers and employees of the factory. Senior officials of the Telangana Police were also present during the program. The first batch of Ghaatak rifles is ready for issue to the Kerala Police. Other state police forces are also interested in the weapon," a senior official from RFI said.

The Ghaatak rifles are unique as holographic day sights and corner sights can be mounted on them. These sights can't be mounted on existing AK-47 rifles. Even the Kolkata Police has sent its AK-47 rifles to RFI for incorporation of these sights.

"State police forces from Assam, Punjab, Manipur, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Bihar, Maharashtra and Nagaland will receive consignments of Ghaatak rifles in subsequent batches shortly. Several other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have given indents for supply of the rifles. The Kerala Police DG appreciated the efforts of RFI in developing the indigenous weapon. He assured that the factory - that developed the 5.56 mm Insas rifle - will receive more orders for Ghaatak, sniper rifles and .303 anti-riot guns from the Kerala Police.

He also requested RFI to provide first-hand training to Kerala Police in use and maintenance of these weapons," the official added.

Varma said that RFI, which has been producing small arms for over 100 years now, will strive towards development of better weapons.
