Gardner: 2016 World Machine Tool Survey (Data & Ranking by Country)

Never thought that building a simple ball point pen could be so complex! Been using Chinese-made fountain pens - Hero brand -- for years.

surprising why a ball in a tube could be such a complex issue. May be China has spent so much time making big things (biggest cities, biggest bridges, biggest dams , biggest railways etc) that it lost sight of how to make little things.

No, you are wrong. China has always been concerned about small things. But in difficult and simple order. We are the first big. Ballpoint pen tips and Chip plagued China for many years. But fortunately, Now China can all manufacture.

By the way —— many countries can make chips or Ballpoint pen tips?

Congratulations to China not a small feet indeed.
I am all for cheaper high quality Chinese goods.

But can they compete against the Pilot G-2?

China just entered a whole knew ball game. :agree:

For years, China has spent millions importing the stainless steel and other equipment from Japan and Switzerland.

Exactly, the apex of manufacturing lies in upstream, like metallurgy and precision machine tool, this story is a vivid example. It's far more technologically challenging in making a critical component than making an assembled product, let alone the hi-precision machine tools (and associated metallurgy tech) needed to make the components.

China should continue to expand upstream industries as lay out in "Made in China 2025", CNC machine tools are among top priorities.

Shenyang Machine Tool : tool giant retools for new era
01/13/2017 | 02:48pm CET
  • The company had everything an employee could wish for: A generous pay package, job security, excellent perks and a brand name that made it easy to get girlfriends.
  • The Shenyang-based company in Northeast China'sLiaoning province has gone from the first company in the nation to produce machine tool to becoming the number one machine-tool maker by sales in the world by 2011 to drop in sales.
  • The labor force now stands at 14,000.
  • The world's first integrated smart machine toolmaker, i5M8, manufactured by the company is a good example of its innovative approach. First launched in 2007, the i5 series broke the dominance of foreign companies and showed that Chinese firms were also capable of producing numerical controlled machine tools.
  • In a move that was a complete break from its past practice, SMTCL decided to rent out the tool instead of just selling it. Any firm that wanted to use it could simply rent it. This step proved an ideal match for the country's entrepreneurship drive, as the company saw 17,000 lease orders by the end of last year. With this decision, the decades-old company successfully transitioned from manufacturing to becoming a service provider. To complete the cycle, SMTCL then launched its own leasing unit to provide intelligent machine tools for use by other entities.
