Karachi: Pakistan's tainted pace bowler Mohammad Asif has described former India stars Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman as technically the best batsmen he bowled to in his roller-coaster career.

Asif's career hit rock bottom in 2010 when he was banned for five years from the sport, and subsequently jailed, for spot-fixing.

"Dravid and Laxman were technically very good and could whip the ball from the off-stump to the onside flawlessly. It was a challenge bowling to them," Asif said in an interview.

Asif, who picked up 106 wickets in 23 Tests and was rated as one of the best new ball operators at the time, said current Indian batting mainstay Virat Kohli reminded him of Dravid and Laxman.

"Virat is also technically very strong and that always makes it a difficult job for the bowler," he said.

Asif, who is now playing domestic cricket and striving to make a comeback to the national team, recalled that his career had taken off with his spell against a strong Indian batting line-up at Karachi in the 2006 Test series.

He disclosed that it was during that Test that he first learnt to bowl the incutter and inswinger.

"Before that I never knew when I bowled the ball that came in. But in that Test I gained control over it and mastered both the outgoing and incoming deliveries. I remember I bowled Virender Sehwag with an inswinger and it set my career rocking."

Asif said Sehwag was a dangerous batsman and he always knew that if you gave him space to free his arms he would whack you.

"The secret was to keep him tied up in his crease. Because he was a powerful stroke player once he got a chance to open his arms."

Asif rubbished arguments that he and former captain Salman Butt had coaxed young Mohammad Aamir into spot-fixing in 2010 in England.

"That is totally wrong. It is double standards to me. If three people have committed a crime you say two are guilty one is innocent. How can that be possible."

"Mohammad Aamir had come from the grass root level to the top level and he knew everything about life. It is unfair to say we were responsible for him getting into the spot."

Asif lamented that the authorities were employing double standards for him and Aamir when it came to getting a chance to play international cricket again.

"Look I know what we did was wrong and a crime and we regret it and we have apologised for what we did. We have served our time. The ICC has said it has no problems with us playing international cricket so what is the problem?"

The pacer also made it clear he considered himself one of the best new ball bowlers in the country at the moment.

"I will be going to the national cricket academy after the domestic season ends next month and I will be working on my fitness with the trainers and coaches there. So there will be no more problems with my fitness."

Asif said he was targetting Pakistan's Test tour of the West Indies to make a comeback.

The pacer said that every bowler had to work on his bowling and bring about improvements himself.

"I always relished the challenge of bowling to the best and my motto was always to make the openers play every ball with the new ball and try to get wickets. That is the job of the new ball bowlers which our bowlers at present are not doing in Australia."

He also backed Aamir to regain his bowling form of 2010 but said the young pacer needs to overcome just one small flaw.

"He is bowling too wide from the stumps, whereas previously, he used to bowl close to the stumps. This minor thing changes the angle of the ball significantly. If he overcomes this problem he can be effective once again.

I have to say this guy is a tool. Blessed with a God given gift he was just simply a genius with the ball and could have had the status of a McGrath or Shaun pollock if he remained committed and dedicated to his sport. The fact is however he is a crook, drug addict and a drunkard. What a waste of talent. I know some players from Wapda team and the stories about him and his shenanigans are quite something. Shame.

He was so talented! On path to be one of the best. Alas!

Funny thing is, even this tool was better than ANY indian bowler in history lol

ICC has made bowlers so disadvantaged in modern game that it has just killed the fun.

Now, a batsman like Kohli doesn't even register on mind because it's a piece of cake for good batsmen to roll through bowling attacks.

Imagine Kohli/DeVelliers facing bowling attacks of Austrailia/Pakistan in late 90's, early 2000's---that would have been a battle worth watching, and if Kohli had succeeded against the likes of McGrath, Warne, Brett Lee, Waseem, Shoaib, Asif etc etc--then we could've called him one of the greatest ever.

But now, yeah, scores lots of runs--but who cares? Average bowling attacks and extremely pro-batsmen game-set up...

is that why PSL was started by pakistan !!

For me the likes of Dravid n Kevin Peiterson were the most technically sound in that era , even gibbs was good . Laxman is down the picking order technically , considering the rich heritage of batsman India always had .

Agree with you, as an avid fan of this game, I have followed Asif's career from the very beginning, It was a treat to see him using the new ball and swinging it both ways, setting traps for the batsmen before getting them out, Post Wasim era Asif was the smartest bowler that Pak had. He did not have brute pace but with seam, ball control and natural ability to swing he was surely up there among the best. He ruined his own career.

One thing I could not help but notice that Pakistani players in the past used to be so street smart, educated, flamboyant and aggressive which is clearly missing from the present teams of late 2000 till now, which mostly consist of village paindoos, you look at Wahab Riaz, he is probably the dumbest bowler I have ever seen, instead of bowling full at outside off to look for an edge, continuously bowling short at a flat deck to aussie batsmen who grow up playing short balls. After the comeback Amir also did not exactly set the stage on fire, he is fairly mediocre so far, if you ask me. As a fan it pains me to see this Pak bowling line up consisting of a dumb speed star, a dumb trundler with severe fitness issue, a bowler with great potential with zero application so far and a spinner who can't spin the ball.

Wasim - yes. He was the greatest left-arm swing and pace bowler ever. But to put Shoaib and Asif in the same league as McGrath, Warne, Brett Lee is laughable. Zaheer Khan probably has more wickets than both Shoaib and Asif put together.

Dravid>Tendulkar>Gangully>laxman..:coffee:

Yeah because Zaheer played in more matches than both Asif and Shoaib whose career was full of injuries and controversies.

laxman is overrated and shouldn't be compared to the wall dravid.

Zaheer was half the bowler asif was . Pakistani bowlers be it Wasim , Waqar , Shoaib , Imran , Asif were a treat to watch . How 1.2 billion population can never produce a single decent fast bowler is mind boggling .

A career must be seen in totality; not in the few peaks that were scaled. Shoaib was capable of bowling incredibly hostile spells but he also bowled a lot of rubbish in between. Asif had too short an international career for us to judge. Waqar Younis too for a few seasons was unplayable and I would rate him much higher than Asif and Shoaib.

Waqar Younis was far above both and was a consistent part of Pakistan team unlike Shoaib and Asif who were in and out of the team through out their career.

Waqar is no comparison to these two guys. Like who can even compare toe crusher like Waqar to anyone else.

I only remotely remember Imran Khan bowling and that too at the end of his career - he wasn't express pace then but was quite accurate. We will just have to disagree on Zak. I think he was the third best left arm pacer to come out of the sub-continent behind Wasim and Chaminda Vaas.

The last few years have seen some good pace bowlers from India in terms of speed but they aren't accurate. Varun Aaron bowls between 145-150 but sprays.

Dravid is one my favorite cricketer , And Asif one of the Greatest bowler .. it would have been a good Stand-off between Two :)
