While it may not be plentiful....it isn't that scarce. There has to be more than 25kg of copper water pipes in every new and old home in the US. It hasn't stopped houses from being built.

Copper is used in development of every car in the market.

We need decent alternatives for fuel in transportation. You don't want the monopoly of OPEC to come to an end? Tesla gives us hope.

Electric cars are the immediate future and self driving cars the next in line. If your country is looking to invest more in this sector, go for the latest technology. It will also be good if other countries of the region also switch to electric cars then the overall transition in each country will be faster.

It was heart breaking for me when Tesla withdrew from Spore few years ago, Our market is totally dominated by Japanese models. I hope it changes for the better.

Just Happened: Tesla Model 3 Supplier Test Drives
It’s no secret: Tesla is aiming to very quickly ramp up its production capacity, and a big part of that is its suppliers and their own production capacity.

With the “final” Model 3 design just getting completed, a big next step is figuring out exactly who will be supplying all of the various parts for the highly coveted vehicle.

Yesterday marked an important day in that process, reportedly being “supplier test drive day.” A TMC forum member with the username “BigMskiman” works down the street from the Tesla factory in Fremont and happened across the event. He/She snapped a couple of beautiful pictures of the silver Model 3 in the parking lot. Enjoy:


The black one that was also used for test drives at the Model 3 unveiling (see our exclusive test track pictures and 20 minutes of video) was apparently also present, but not for long, and BigMskiman didn’t have a good chance to snap a photo of it.

Pretty beautiful car, no? And BigMskiman said the same as Kyle and me — the Model 3 looks really nice in person, up close. It looks better in person than in pictures, imho, but I guess it’s a hard thing to compare since picture vary so much.

One exciting thing to me is that the Model 3 unveiled on March 31 seems much further along than the Model X that was originally unveiled in a similar manner. It wasn’t until ordering began that we really saw a finalized Model X, but I get the impression this is very close to a finalized Model 3. (See: “Tesla Model 3 Drivetrain At March 31 Launch Was Production” & “Holy Cow, Tesla Has Moved Its 500,000 Cars-A-Year Aim To 2018.”)

Of course, we’re still waiting on “Unveiling Part 2” and a finalized interior, and the trunk may be altered a bit to make it more utilitarian. Also, there’s the possibility Tesla could change the frontend a bit based on consumer feedback. But with the drivetrain finalized and full design a few weeks away from being finalized, per Elon’s words on the last Tesla financials call, one can presume that these initial spy shots capture what we will basically be seeing on the road in a couple of years … on a lot of roads.

And remember, a clay model of the Model 3 from 2010 looks quite similar to the car that was just unveiled, so it’s clear Tesla has been pretty far along in the design for a long time, and has just been tweaking things.

There was a Tesla Model 3 at Tesla's new Solar Panel announcement. A couple of quick footed people grabbed some footage of it before being wisked away by security.

Seems to be the same silver car from back in March.

This indeed is one small step for Tesla but, giant leap for mankind.

Global warming is far more essential issue than getting to moon in a stupid race ever was.

The internal combustion engined car built for the masses has had an over 100+ year run. Just like the LED vs incandescent lightbulb it is time to move into the 21st Century.

Hopefully they can come up with a more mid sized sedan.
The model 3 looks like the size of an Audi A1 coupe.

Tesla Model 3 will probably have a solar roof option – maybe even ‘deployable’, says CEO Elon Musk

After announcing a new all-glass option similar to the Model 3, but available now on the Model S today, CEO Elon Musk went on a ‘Tweetstorm’ and revealed that Tesla could offer a similar option with embedded solar cells for the Model 3.

The roof would be able to generate solar energy to power the vehicle and/or the components inside…

That’s something that people have been speculating about since earlier this week when Musk said that Model 3 will feature a new type of glass developed in-house by the new ‘Tesla Glass’ tech group.

While Tesla developed the glass part of the ‘solar roof’ products and that automotive applications could just feature some new type of glass without any energy generating capability, we now learn that it could “probably” become an option on Tesla’s upcoming $35,000 all-electric vehicle.

Here’s what he said exactly in response to someone making the same previously mentioned assumption:

Now we’ve discussed solar roofs on Ford EVs before, and most recently with the one on the new Prius Prime, but the recurring problem is that it rarely generates enough power to be worth it.

For example, we estimated that the solar cells on the Prius Prime’s roof could generate enough power to add about ~2 miles of range during the day. And of course, that’s highly dependent on where you are in the world and where you park your car.

A 3 foot by 5 foot rooftop solar panel is usually rated at around 300w. You can almost convert that from hours to miles in a vehicle. If you get the equivalent of 5 rooftop hours of sun a day, you can expect to add 5 miles of range. That’s about equivalent to Tesla’s original “vampire” draw of electronics over the same period of time but the company has vastly improved this over the years.

A car’s roof is just not very big and efficiently positioned relative to the sun often enough to make a good support for a solar array. It’s generally more efficient to have solar panels at your house and charge your car there – but every little bit helps.

But Musk is now thinking about a “deployable solar shield like a retractable hard top”:

Presumably to increase the surface to generate more energy. It’s hard to tell if he is joking here. After the hyperloop and reusable rocket boosters, it’s hard not to take him seriously when he floats out of the box ideas like that.

He also commented on the price of the potential system and said that it wouldn’t be “super expensive”:

There’s also a ton of transparent solar technologies out there that use energy from the non-visible infrared or ultraviolet spectrum that can be placed on windows and other surfaces and still get nearly 20% efficiency.
