What's new

Pakistan will launch a two-seater version of JF-17 - Induction of JF-17B in 2017

Any news on the trainer's manufacturing progress ???

When will it be rolled-out ?

I hope they also work on the design to make it look a bit prettier :) its one of ugliest planes!

Its still undergoing assembly in Chengdu. The Fuel fraction is still badly affected by the extra seat.
What about BLOCK III ? Is designing phase over and when will construction of first one begin ?

For me this design has issues with the second pilot's view of the rear , the canopy has to be full glass from front to back , like the F16, can't we just import that 1 piece in bulk ? Bubble canopy ?

I don't feel the pilot in the back can have a nice 360 view all around

The weird curve in the spine has to go

Present 1 seat design the "arch" is low , and the pilot can see a good 340 degree-350 degree view and the plane overall feels a bit "Longer"

Not sure if the model is at a proper scale to capture the future 2 seater design, I would have expected the design to give an impression of a longer plane design even at scaled levels

What input ratio will China and Pakistan have into this 2 seater plane?

Just with with a "straight" lower spine of plane , the back pilot can scan back side of plan easily if needed

  • A good rear view "visual" is nice to have vs stealth when radars give you minimal information

Always nice to have eyes in the back while pilot flies forward

That is why I was suggesting just go with new Bubble cannopy design for 2 seater while keeping the spine flat for maximum view of rear action for Jet visual recon

Bubble cannopy design is excellent it gives you a complete view of your back side
and if you are going up against stealth , really nice to have a guy looking back for any
movement

If the rear pilot has some quality "visual" aid devices , it would minimize a ambush from stealth from behind

Hi,

Bubble canopies---neither the chinese nor the russians have the ability to manufacture bubble canopies---. manufacturing a bubble canopy is a feat of engineering.

With modern technology---you don't need a bubble canopy for situational awareness---you can have rear view cameras and sensors.

Can't Pakistan Just order some prototype from F16 company ? We don't have ban on import of parts for F16 just order 100 Canopy items

Give that company a requirement for Manufacturing the Canopy for Thunder , it is not a item like Engine or anything technical , just a glass structure

I bet you 100-200 Canopy would not even cost 1-50 Million

If Pakistan will give the US company to design a custom Canopy for its Thunder fleet

But quite surprising considering the canopy design has been out for 30-35 years

The only impact to present Thunder Design would be "the fixed part" would be moved back like it is in F16 while the glass structure will cover all the way to front

Considering US - Russia trade Rocket Technology for space program so I really doubt why a mere canopy would be anything of interest

lmfao.
No.
It is not a feat of engineering, more like a feat of glasswork.

Heres the first plane with a bubble canopy, made by the brits in WW2

Hi,

If you had done a bit of research rather than posting a couple of pictures---you would have had a better understanding----.

The J20 initially came out with a bubble canopy---but it changed when it actual production models came out.

Even though it is named---it is not a one piece bubble canopy

For a two seater---it would be very large canopy and pretty epensive as well---. And as for the spine of the JF17---there must be something in it for it to be designed as such.

@member.exe had a great thread about the canopies
