BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's regime was declared 'illegal' by supreme court long time ago. Due to this reason Awami Legaue government took back his 'Independence Award' given by BNP government.
Ziaur Rahman was a Bangladeshi nationalist politician who served as the 7th President of Bangladesh from 21 April 1977 until his assassination on 30 May 1981 by some Army personnel.
Zia, Ershad no more to get benefits as ex-president

Ziaur Rahman ,,,,,HM Ershad
Former presidents of Bangladesh Lieutenant General (retd) Ziaur Rahman and Lieutenant General (retd) Hussain Muhammad Ershad both gained power as head of the army under martial law.Ziaur Rahman rose to power after the country's first military coup on 15 August 1975, in which Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed. A series of counter-coups resulted Zia gaining de facto power as head of the army under martial law. He took over the presidency in 1977. HM Ershad seized power as head of the army during a bloodless coup against President Abdus Sattar in 1982. Ershad served in office until 1990, when he was forced to resign during a popular uprising against his autocratic ruling.
Both of them enjoyed a lot of benefits and made amendments for their own benefits during their regimes. Even after their tenure HM Ershad and Ziaur Rahman's family have been enjoying a lot of benefits under the amendments made by them just for their own sake. However, they won't be able to enjoy such benefits anymore.Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on law ministry Suranjit Sengupta made the assertion. We are going to adopt a new amendment in this regard, he said.
As the former chief justice cancelled the fifth and seventh amendment of the constitution so the laws (mainly passed for those two ex-presidents) are not valid anymore, Suranjit Sengupta added.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressing a press conference at BNP central office in the city's Naya Paltan on Friday.
Dhaka: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the government has decided to cancel the posthumous independence award of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
He said he learnt it from the news published in different mass media and BNP's own sources.
Addressing a press conference at BNP central office in the city's Naya Paltan on Friday, he said, "We have learnt through mass media and our own sources that the cabinet committee has decided to cancel Ziaur Rahman's posthumous independence award. Such a decision will be self-destructive and unfortunate."
Replying to a question of journalists, Fakhrul said, "We have learnt that the cabinet committee has taken such a decision. The entire nation is surprised and worried over such a decision of the government. Ziaur Rahman led the War of Liberation in 1971 and fought the war. The post-independence government awarded him with 'Bir Uttam' for his contributions to the War of Liberation. People of Bangladesh also know Ziaur Rahman from that time."
The BNP secretary general observed that the ruling Awami League was pushing the country towards destruction through their politics. "Ziaur Rahman had introduced the Independence Award. Those who are now trying to eliminate the achievements of Ziaur Rahman, they might be eliminated one day."
Fakhrul said BNP had awarded Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman with Independence Award in 2003. "It was a great example in the politics of Bangladesh."
BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice-chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury and joint secretary general Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, were present at the press conference.
