Japan’s first ever domestic passenger jet has successfully embarked on its maiden test flight, culminating a decade of development for a programme aimed at competing with Brazilian and Canadian rivals in the global market for smaller aircraft.

The Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) – developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries – lifted off from the runway at Nagoya airport on Wednesday.

The two-engine aircraft, approximately 35 metres (115ft) long, flew smoothly upward into clear skies in central Japan.

The plane marks a new chapter for Japan’s aviation sector, which last debuted a commercial airliner in 1962: the YS-11 turboprop, which was discontinued about a decade later.

The MRJ will seat about 80 passengers and is seen competing with other regional passenger jet manufacturers such as Brazil’s Embraer and Canada’s Bombardier.

Not sure what took Japan so long? It should have been a piece of cake for them to make one even a decade back. Great Job brothers.. Congratulations.

No, its not. Just becos Japan is good in making electronic product or some heavy machinery does not equal to a equal robust aviation sector. This plane progress is just an actual reflection of Japanese aviation progress.

Why your president want a short legged and small plane as his presidential plane? How would he get to USA to visit his master? By making 3 stop for refuelling before reaching USA?

Japan is major supplier of aerostructures , software, assembly & sub- assembly to all major aerspace giants in the world.
They also manufacture military strategic platform like P1-Kawasaki.
Well, but their first foray into civil aviation market as lead intregator is bit late but welcoming indeed.
More competition means more innovation & cheap price.

"Kitna deti hai?" I mean what is the rate of fuel consumption? If it is good and with the right price, it can be a winner for short distance travel for countries like India!!
