JF17 is a contender in Bulgarian Fighter jet Acquisition

283 million USD is not even enough for one squadron.

A advice to the Pak Govt: officials... contact USA, Holand, Belgium, Greece said them that we want to buy f-16s from you.. and buy f-16s from them... then contact Bulgaria and said them that we want to exchange jf-17s with your mig-29...

its a win-win situation as bulgaria has new fighter jet with western suits, and pak has more f-16s and a operator of jf-17 and mig-29 as aggressor..

Probably won't win, as Bulgaria is looking for NATO-standard fighters, but the fact that Bulgaria is even considering it is a big win for the thunder.
There should be an European engine variant also, many countries have issues with Russian technology, especially in the middle east and Nato.

Bulgaria to begin negotiations for 'new' fighter aircraft

Bulgaria has approved the procurement of a new combat aircraft type to replace its ageing MiG-29 'Fulcrum' and Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' platforms, national media reported on 1 July.

The country's cabinet approved the purchase of an as-yet-unidentified combat aircraft to replace the air force's Warsaw Pact-era fighters that have been in service since 1988 and 1986 respectively, according to the Novinite.com Sofia News Agency .

Defence minister Nikolay Nenchev made the announcement that he is to begin negotiations with Belgium, Greece, and the Netherlands for the procurement of surplus Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon jets, although another aircraft type from a different source remains an option. According to Nenchev, the air force requires at least nine aircraft to retain a viable 'combat air' capability.

While timelines were not disclosed, the minister is reported to have said that the issue of a repair agreement for the MiG-29s currently in service is not driving any deadlines as he expects a contract to be signed with Poland by the end of August at the latest.

Since announcing its plans to recapitalise its combat aircraft fleet, Bulgaria has been linked to the purchase of surplus Block 25 F-16s from the US Air National Guard, F-16AM midlife upgrade aircraft from Belgium, early tranche Eurofighter Typhoons from the Italian Air Force, surplus Saab Gripens from Sweden, as well as the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex/Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (PAC/CAC) JF-17 Thunder. This latest announcement by Nenchev now throws Dutch F-16AM and Greek F-16C/D platforms into the mix.

The acquisition of 'new' fighters is expected to cost approximately BGN500 million (USD283 million).

This 'other aircraft' may well be Gripen. It is used by Hungary. Slovakia and Sweden have signed an MoU on use of Gripens (may be a lease) The letter of intent laid the foundation for bilateral co-operation around a common airspace surveillance of Slovakia and the Czech Republic, which has leased 12 Gripens from Sweden.

They can actually buy 9 jets in $283 million. JFT Block-II costs $30 m.
$30 m x 9 = $270 m :yahoo:

but if im not wrong used f16 are cheap too around 10 million dollar max for block 40 just like jordanian version.
the mid life upgrade is expensive ... they are cheap due to their obsolete airframe, hence MLU is necessary for them

given the new fighter acquisition budget, JF-17 has a strong chance :)
actually no. Bulgaria will most likely choose surplus f16's as it would want to build ties with nato. also PAF would choose the f16 over the jf-17 so why should Bulgaria be any different.

well F-16 is strong contender as well. specially second hand F-16's will cost very less compared to thunders. But then MLU will be expensive.
PAF has been operating F-16's for 3 decades, and they know the plane from in and out. so it is natural that they will try to get more of them as the Infrastructure and experience already exists. But JF-17 is still evolving.
Also its cost is low thus it gives a good opportunity to those air forces that have limited budget.

considering 280 m usd budget ,, MLU will be expensive

Don't understand whether it's a standard joke at this forum or what, every week there is a jf17 sale announced/ intended to a new country, without anything happening about it.

Can anyone tell if there is anyone who has bought that plane ever?
