but asteroids and stars do not measure time... nor would possible bacterium on jupiter's ice moon, europa... it is animals on our world who do, especially humans who measure it more precisely... and who knows about possible human-equivalent beings elsewhere...

time is no human construct. actually time is only scale that meassures the aspects of the 4th dimension.

i somehow never believed in words like "space-time continuum". :)

Just because other beings cant measure time doesnt mean time doesnt exist.And how do we know that they dont measure it?? like in the animal world birds measure time by sun's position.And am sure it happens at the cellular (even single cell level) too. Afterall our body is made up of many such single cells. Isnt it??? :)

What would happen if there ever is an impact of something this big?

the meteor that passed over russia early 2013... just its passage kilometers above damaged 1000+ buildings and other possible damage and caused 7000+ injuries... and that meteor was about 20+ meters wide... imagine the damage by this four kilometer wide comet exploding in earth's lower atmosphere or smashing into the ground.

there is the "apophis" asteroid that is supposed by pass within 35,000 kilometers of earth in 2028... and a possible second pass, what six years later [ question mark here... that key is not working ]

there may be a bio-timer within them but since they are not sentient they will not use time like we do.

@levina @Nihonjin1051 have you seen "sunshine"... if not please do watch this film about a mission to the sun... natural acting most of the film, beautiful scenes, beautiful music.

To be honest, I've not seen the film 'Sunshine'. Is it a recent documentary?

space travel will be the most spiritual journey... every construct of humanity, be it religion, be it technology, will ever be humbled by the objects and infinity of space... humans will believe their littleness when they finally travel in deep space.

One area that drew my attention in the film was the concept of space time and i loved how the film "Interstellar" illustrated how time does run slower in worlds with greater gravitational forces. That movie, tho officially 3 hours long, seemed, to me that is, not long enough. Loved how they had seamless cohesion of quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, human emotions, all rolled into one film. The essential , underlying theme of primordial forces to be with your loved ones or to accept the sacrificial role of leaving one's comfort zone to realize and achieve the greater good (in regards to the main protagonist, was finding a future for humanity). That internal conflict, that scathing acceptance of what needed to be done despite one's intrapsychic tension to be with loved ones--- is what , for me that is, captivated my attention and drew my tears.
 
I will say something about the tidal forces when im back home. Just a hint, you dont get ripped apart when you cross the event horizon of a super massive black hole like Gargantua. If the black hole is a smaller "stellar" one you get ripped apart because the hill sphere is much smaller and the tidal forces so big that you get stretched and ripped apart but a supermassive black hole with many million or even billion times the mass of the sun has a gargantuan gravitational pull. The event horizon is so big, that it starts far from the center. The one in our galaxy for example has a event horizon bigger than our solar system. That means the entire construct is so vast, that the density is pretty low. Its simply stretched over such a a vast space. You would experience rougly 1g when you cross the horizon. In the movie they dont explain it further. TARS only mentions once, that Gargantua is a "heart of darkness, fast spinning and with relative weak tidal forces, because of this".

Okay, then let's assume than you have spacecraft that produces 10G of thrust. Spacecraft passes event horizon with a 1 meter and fires it's thrusters. Can it escape event horizon ?

No it can´t because relativity. You need faster than light speed to be able to break free from the event horizon. But you are unable to surpass the speed of light. Its the ultimate speed limit. No matter how hard you try. Because of that you could never leave the event horizon. Once you crossed the event horizon you fall towards the singularity. But you don´t speed up. Your speed stays constantly at 99,9999999....% the speed of light.

Considering the fact that Gargantua was a supermassive black hole, its event horizon would be a sphere with a radius as big as our solar system. It takes light almost 8 hours from sun to Pluto. This means Cooper would fall over 8 hours until he finally reaches the singularity.

But infact his fall was stopped within minutes and he was trapped in the tesseract. The tesseract was a construction of future humans. They call them the "bulk beeings". They are able to interact multi dimensional. As Amelia said: For them time might just be another plane. "Like walking up a hill or down a valley".

Humanity in Coopers time is near extinction. If humanity dies, the future humans would die too. Humanity needs teh data from a black hole to find the solution to survive. It is impossible to let any signal leave the black hole because the event horizon prevents anything to leave it. There is only one force that can interact through all dimensions: gravity.

When Coopers falls into Gargantua the "bulke beings" created the tesseract, using Gargantuas gigantic gravitational powers and his memory. He can remmber certain things like time and space where Murphy is, how she is and so on. He can send gravitational signals to her. That way she was able to read the data, find the solution and save all of humanity.

This physics are never explained openly in the movie. The movie expects that all know this concept...it just makes hints. Like the GPS signals who let the trucks go all to his house or the indian drone fail.

It was part of my university semesters. Our prof went into it for some days and he had the ability to talk so good about it that it got evryone excited When we asked him what is the universe, he simply said:

"the symphony of gravity"

and that phrase catched me :D
