Yes bro, some members here are talking as if no country involved in space launch has ever witnessed an accident of this sort. All space powers have encountered such incidences one way or another. So its just ignorance laughing at the U.S in such a case. Moreover the U.S is a top tier 1 space power, so if they want to be laughing at the U.S, at least they have to be better than the U.S in this respect, before they indulge in mockeries.

Dont mind your Russian 'friend/brother' . He's just making such comments simply because he has a beef with the U.S, and also due to the sanctions the U.S imposed on Russia(which is affecting the Russian economy), so anything remotely negative that happens in the U.S will be cheered.lol Also expect to see more funny(or even hostile) comments(like the Russian ambassador to India comments about Chinese S27 fighters being superior to the rafale.lool) coming from Russia towards permanent weapons client India as India moves closer to the West/Israel/U.S for its arms needs. So seems the more things move unfavorably for the Russians, the more paranoid/irrational they become with some of their statements.

America used Russia's help. The rockets engines were Russian, purchased and refurbished by an American contractor. Time will tell if there was a flaw in the rockets themselves, or if there was a problem with the refurbishment.

There are several companies in the US that do rocketry, so this was the low bidder on this particular project. I wouldn't take it as a referendum on American rocketry in general, at this point.

Whenever something like this happens, whether it happened to the US, to China, or any country, there is always a rush to judgement as to causes, and always within hours of the event. Do these people have ANY technical education AT ALL ? I wonder. You see people who can barely tell the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver but have no problems making declarations about the plumbings of rockets, the electronics of flight computers, and the experience of others.

This incident has brought out the anti-american bumpkins in droves. I can't tell you how many times I've read something to the effect of, "This is the end of NASA/America!" and other crap like that. It's like their hiding in the shadows ready to pounce on any mistake made. It's absurd.....

The choice to use contractors is NASA's choice. If that is the way they are doing it, and the contractors screw up, it is fair to ask NASA wtf. Expecting every launch to be perfect is probably a bit much, and you need to look at the program as a whole - what are you getting for the money you spend? Looking at a single success or failure is potentially misleading.

A slightly comical big-picture view: Interplanetary Lobbing

Overall, I think NASA is doing ok. I would like to see the manned missions dropped, as without a totally revolutionary propulsion system, there is nowhere to go with a human that is interesting to me. Probes serve better and cheaper for scientific investigation. Industrial/mining applications are totally economically infeasible without a revolution in propulsion - so spend the money on propulsion research over futile manned missions.

I don't mind using launch systems outside the US for this reason. If your trying to get bang for the buck, and India can put something into space for less, outsource it. The important part isn't getting something to space, that's routine. The work that happens after is what is important.

First of all, NASA is supporting Orbital and SpaceX by giving them contracts and vice versa.
SpaceX for one, is a company that is developing reusable rockets, so yes these contracts given to them by NASA are expensive, but much needed money is being raised for such developments. I don't know much about Orbital, but i know one thing for sure,
THEY SELF DESTRUCTED THE ROCKET TO PREVENT FROM GOING INTO CIVILIAN POPULATION!
They found out seconds after the launch that it wouldn't reach the orbit, therefore they decided to self destruct it.

He asked for accomplishments, not only of successful launches. Russia can have a thousand successful launches of dummy satellites and that would tilt the stats in Russia's favor. But if we are talking about real accomplishments, the Moon landing and the Space Shuttle program got everyone beat.

Really, getting to orbit it old hat. Been done. Where are your Mars probes? Jupiter? Saturn? Neptune? Pluto? comets? Russia/USSR's Mars record is 5 out of 18 successes. Only China and Japan have worse rates, because they've each only tried once.

NASA has 16 successful missions to 5 failures at Mars. 9 successes to 1 failure at Venus. 2 successes and no failures at Mercury. 6 successes to 0 failures on Jupiter missions. 4 missions have looked at Saturn (no failures). NASA has done fly-bys of both Neptune and Uranus. NASA has probes on the way to both Ceres (an asteroid) and Pluto. Russia isn't doing anything like that - just launches, largely for other people.

In terms of people in space, NASA has put about 330 Americans in space, Russia about 120 Russian/Soviet citizens.

And of course, putting 12 people on the moon. Only Americans have been on the moon thus far. Looks like China will be next, at the rate things are going. Russia does not appear to be in the running for that.
