The Iranian oil ministry has dismissed the reports about canceling the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project, the ministry’s official news agency SHANA reported Oct. 19.

Earlier, Pakistani media outlets reported that Iran has unilaterally ended the government-to-government cooperation agreement with Pakistan, and after this decision the IP gas pipeline project has become unfeasible.

The Islamic Republic’s oil ministry announced that despite some differences on the issue, the Iranian side is committed to continue cooperation to finalize the project, the oil ministry’s PR department said.

A high-ranking Pakistani delegation is due to visit Iran in the new future to discuss accelerating the project’s implementation, according to the report.

The IP gas pipeline is projected to cost $1.2-1.5 billion and would enable to export 21.5 million cubic meters of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan on a daily basis.

Iran has already built 900 kilometers of the pipeline on its own soil and is waiting for the Pakistani side’s 700-kilometre section to be constructed.

However, Pakistan has made little progress on laying its section of the long planned pipeline; largely due to lack of funds for the costly project and the U.S pressure to drop it.

Pakistan will have to pay a penalty if it fails to lay the pipeline within its territory by December this year.

Pakistani Energy Delegation to Visit Iran to Expedite IP Gas Pipeline

"Tehran and Islamabad are determined to implement their gas exports contract and a Pakistani delegation will travel to Iran soon to expedite construction of the gas export pipeline to Iran," the oil ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry noted that Tehran and Islamabad have close cooperation to accomplish the IP gas pipeline despite their differences in this regard.

Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Pakistani counterpart called on relevant officials to do their best to remove the existing barriers to the expedition of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.

In a meeting in New York, the two sides pointed out that more delay in implementation of the pipeline in Pakistani soil is not economic, and vowed to coordinate efforts to make the fruitful project operational in near future.

The Iranian and Pakistani foreign ministers also underlined the need for increasing the trade transactions volume and strengthening cooperation between the two countries' trade ministries and their interior ministries to increase the security of the borders to prevent drug trafficking, illegal trespassing and activities of the terrorist groups.

Iran wishes to export its natural gas to Pakistan, India and China through the pipeline.

Iran has already built its 900-kilometer share of the pipeline on its own soil and is waiting for the 700-kilometer Pakistani side of the pipeline to be built.

Iran and Pakistan signed an agreement over the construction of a gas pipeline in 1995. Later, Iran made a proposal to extend the pipeline from Pakistan into India. In February 1999, an accord between Iran and India was signed.

But due to the US pressure, India withdrew from the project in 2009.

One day there is news that it's cancelled, other day no and i don't think anybody from Pak govt. denied yesterday's media report but anyway there is no chances that this project will go through unless Iran stuck some deal with US+P5. So, opening new threads on this topic is waste of space.

Economic programs and initiatives should be perused , for general good of economy. Regardless of external pressures

Border incursions and issues are something that should be viewed in light of , rouge parties busy in disturbances so both nations should work together to capture the disruptive forces

Pak-Iran gas pipeline project not abandoned: Sartaj Aziz

ISLAMABAD: (Dunya News) – Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has said that Pak-Iran gas pipeline project has not been abandoned. He informed that Pakistan and Iran are improving their border mechanism to avoid misunderstandings in future. “Pakistan will not allow its soil to be used against anyone”, said Sartaj Aziz.

Addressing the tri-nation conference in Islamabad today (Monday), Sartaj Aziz said that Afghanistan cannot afford a proxy war anymore. He said that Pakistan is against foreign interference in Afghanistan. “Hope of peace has been renewed after new government has taken over in Afghanistan”, he said.

Sartaj Aziz said that Pakistan and China want a stable Afghanistan. He said that border issues keep popping up between Pakistan and Iran because some areas on the border are fragile where criminals and smugglers operate, however, all the matters will be resolved through negotiations.

This mindset is the reason why our country is not moving forward. If we follow the follwing procedure we won't be dependent on 1 sole entity.

We need to diversify our energy requirements:
1) Continue with the IP line, as well as the TAP line. May eventually become fruitful with transit fees for IPI or TAPI
2) Develop renewable energy sources. (Solar, hydro, thermal etc)
3) Continue expansion of nuclear energy sources with next gen reactors.
4) Exploit our own natural resources.
5) Import LPG/CNG to gwadar from Qatar etc.

5 sources of energy = independence to an extent.

Sorry i'd also like to add a sixth energy source:
6) Fracking/shale gas

We won't need 1-5 if we properly developed (6).

How old are you kiddo.

Do you even know what fracking means.....a country like Britain which is neither short of money nor short of technology is not going for fracking. Do you even know how it works...kindly just stop copy pasting it.

A small project requires 2 trillion gallons of water with 40 thousand litters of chemicals, Being an energy consult myself you don't know these things better than me. This tech is an environmental hazard. Enuf said.

ok rocket scientist. Kiddo? i'm probably old enough to be your dad. Britain isn't going for fracking? well living in the UK i can tell you they are. Come back to me in 5-10 years and then tell me.

I know the basics of how it works and never stated i'm a so called CONSULTANT or SPECIALIST.

every project has costs. Other energy sources have environmental hazards. It hasn't stopped anyone from pursuing them.

Don't think you know it all, $$$$ is to be made via fracking it is inevitably going to be a worldwide phenomenon as technology improves.

PS I'm a day trader trading the energy markets. So you don't know energy markets better than me. Comprende.

As US Iran conversation getting traction, IP pipeline will not have obstacle. Pakistan has to make sure to work with China to extend it to all the way. If this can happen, it will be a strategic underpinning for Pakistan in contentious coming days.
