The news paper proves my points too. 40,000 Sinhalese official do not know Sinhala. How many of the Tamil officials might not have known Sinhalese or Tamil.

Tamil officials probably knew tamil. you cant expect 40000 men to learn sinhala and switch a langauge. That is impractical even ignoring the morality of the decision. You cant get trained in one language and work in another. SL should have used more subtle steps with time.

As i said before tamils were starting to learn sinhala as a language after independance. that is why tamil parents started even private tution for sinhala langauge. with imposing sinhala on them in 56 they rejected it and stop sinhala learning.

Sinhala people and leaders suffered from hastiness and urgency. If they waited for few years and treated sinhala and tamil with parity while being rational about english, english to sinhala transition would have been smoother and a war could have been prevented.

How does 40000 people not speaking sinhala prove your point that these 40000 should work in sinhala? how do a people work in a language they do not understand...if you have anything between your ears you should have realised it is this stupid and meaningless language issue that has dragged us as a country since 1960 to this day.

This country has been dragged to a level the sinhala racists who rejected english has to send their kids to countries where they speak and work in english in search of a good life. Pathetic! disastrous! stupidity at its best! The same stupitity that helps mad monks like BBS

Well if the official who servers do not know the language of the people how can they serve the people? It is better they leave or learn that language, rather than waiting for the people to learn it. There is a issue with the procedure but the core issue is the former.

Their is a issue with procedure and timing but the act was enacted to restore the national language which was used before 1815. I do not think anyone has a problem with that. Tamils should have respected the policy while showing it's errors. Then Sinhalese leaders could have worked on that. Sinhalese always listened to what Tamils had to say.

The official has been doing his job quite successfully probably 50+ years. So why the hurry and make a big mess of things? SLG should have continued with English trying to include Sinhala and tamil into the administration step by step. That is being sane and rational which of course I understand why you fail to grasp. That is given a one quarter of your population rejecting the language switch. If you are married you cannot force your decisions on your partner and make her do only what you want at the threat of force. That marriage is doomed to fail. Same with countries, nations.
The educated people left but the loser was SL. So the ‘do as we say or leave’ has not really worked in favor of SL. Now the Sinhala speakers are leaving SL to Sudda’s countries. What else can define a ‘failure’?
That is exactly it is the issue with the procedure, that is what I am saying. No one is questiong the necessity to replace English with native languages.

The Sinhala language was used only in southern and central part of the island. I again tell you Kandy is not SL. SL is a much larger land with different communities unlike Kandy. For god’s sake have a look at the SL map. Why should tamils respect the policy where they are neglected and pulled down to a second place? The constant complaining, protests from 56 to 70s, agreements with banda and Dudley, constant appeal for changes is not showing errors to you?
Actually tamils need not show errors, Sinhala leaders should have grey matter to understand there is growing grievances among tamils and we need to answer and manage that. Rather force and violence was used to put down protests. Sinhala leaders tore pacts with banda and chelva due to mad monks at that time and Sinhala racists.
“Sinhalese always listened to what Tamils had to say” :D tell me one instance I d like to know….

@HeinzG
what you people do not realise is 1956 is just 8 years after independance. Had SL waited like 10 years with english speaking administrators and step by step inclusion of native languages by 1966 there will be a sinhala speaking and english speaking ethnic 'Sinhala' civil servants joining administration. And the tamil civil servants would be speaking tamil, sinhala and english because tamil parents had already started to educate their children on sinhala language. Instead of an imposed forced langauge switch the langauge of administration would have switched automatically by time.

So we could have retained the good essense of english speaking (sinhala, tamil and burgher) civil servants and run our policy matters efficiently and by the time they retire a new crop of administrators who can speak sinhala very well. It is the lack of this practical sense and realities that created and continue to create many issues in SL.

Tamils would have anyhow learnt sinhala because that gave them good economic and educational opportunities. SInhala leaders just messed it up with imposition of sinhala
