SRINAGAR, India – Indian forces used tear gas and wooden batons to disperse scores of Kashmiri demonstrators who raised anti-India slogans and threw rocks to protest against voting in Indian elections in the disputed region.

The protesters also attacked some polling stations with rocks in two towns, Bijbehara and Pulwama, on Thursday, but there was no disruption in voting in Kashmir, a police officer said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Thursday is one of several voting days in Kashmir. But rebels and separatist politicians have urged people to boycott the vote to show that they do not recognize India's sovereignty over the region.

With 814 million eligible voters, India is voting in phases over six weeks, with results announced May 16.

Morally Speaking, India has already lost the Kashmir Valley and the Kashmiri People.

Since 1990, India has removed all doubt that it is an occupying force in Kashmir.

In a State with less than 10 Million people, Killing of over 100,000 people represents killing of 1% of Kashmir's Population.

After this amount of Bloodshed of Kashmiris, how can India have any legitimacy in Kashmir.

Kashmir is not India's " Atoot Ung ", it is India's " Toota huwa Ung ". Period.

ur fate-politically, economically, legally — remains in the hands of Islamabad, thanks to the quirks and tragedies of history,” says Tahir Hussain, a Skardu resident. “We might have nothing to say — we will not be voting — but the next election will matter. The new government in Islamabad could help enshrine, or remove, our rights

While the rest of the country goes to the polls, the two million-strong population in this northern mountain range will have nothing to say when it comes to deciding who gets to sit in power in Islamabad.

instead, Perwana argues,
the Pakistan government has colonised Gilgit-Baltistan, and mishandled and misrepresented the real situation to the international community.

“This region Baltistan, which operates under the de facto administration of Pakistan, has no identity, no constitution, no system, no freedom of expression, no impartial judiciary, no free media, no free movement, no human rights, no rights of vote and no freedom of expression. I

nstead, it is one of the last colonies of the 21st century, and what Baroness Emma Nicholson, a member of the European Parliament, called a ‘Black Hole’,” says Perwan

Routine. Expect more in the day. Ganderbal, Sopore, Anantnag, Srinagar, Baramulla - there will always be trouble. Pulwama is a jihadi stronghold. Don't expect more than 25% voting there. Other places if there is 45%+ - its huge.

45% is huge.Sarthak. But what do you think Indian Government should do to make it above 80? A massive change in K policy? Development issues?

Actually previously North Kashmir voted on an average 35 to 40 %, while South Kashmir voted more. This time it may increase a bit. Above 80%? Make voting compulsory, I guess :ashamed: Legally possible and humane. If you don't vote the subsidies that are in place will not be provided or may be reduced. I know this is a braindead solution

Make voting compulsory? Don't you think this legally possible way could have an unfortunate repercussion among ordinary people? I thought the removal of AFSPA could do a much better job.

Of course. I said that is was a braindead solution. AFSPA? Still won't go above 60. Kashmiris are lazy :P

“The people of the region have since been bearing the brunt of this flawed policy and resultantly, the constitutional status of Gilgit-Baltistan has been in limbo,” said Syed Ansar Hussain, a resident of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Its marginalisation from Pakistani politics is nothing new. In 1948, when this area acceded to Pakistan, it was promised constitutional recognition by the Pakistani state. Instead, Pakistan linked Gilgit-Baltistan to Jammu and Kashmir,

“We want complete constitutional rights declaring this region as a fifth province of the country,” said Dedar Ali, a newly nominated provincial minister in the GBLA.

They have been demanding the provincial status for Gilgit Baltistan.....!
