Mahindra inaugurates India's first Electric Vehicle manufacturing plant

With petrol prices skyrocketing beyond the common mans budget, alternate fuels are sure to make their presence felt sooner than we expected. Mahindra has already thought ahead and will be the first manufacturer to jump onto the electric bandwagon. Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd., a part of the US $15.4 billion Mahindra Group, formally inaugurated its manufacturing facility, which is the first platinum rated automobile facility in India.

EV’s are being seen as a serious alternative to fossil fuel driven cars and Mahindra is all set to take a lead in developing the EV segment and the surrounding ecosystem. The new manufacturing plant is, in a way the first tangible proof point of the Future of Mobility – this is the first purpose-built, ground-up EV plant in India, the first manufacturing plant to get IGBC platinum rating, the first plant where cars get their first fill using solar power. In fact, this plant will consume the least amount of energy per car build, with 1/3rd of this energy coming from solar power.

Mahindra Reva also unveiled a host of technologies. The technologies showcased include ‘Quick2Charge’, by which the car can be charged in 15 minutes to run 25 km, thereby providing customers with increased convenience. In order to tap and use the abundant solar energy for mobility, Mahindra Reva has designed a personal charging unit called

  • ‘Sun2Car’ - Provides free and clean energy for the lifetime of the car, making it a very cost-effective solution.
    ‘Car2Home’ - Provides free and clean energy from car to home :woot: !
While it cannot be said that only Electrics will rule the future, it is certain that alternate fuels make a strong case for themselves and will be here sooner than you think. And when they do, Mahindra will be ready.

Low on safety- no seats, no set belts, headlamps, bumpers, windshield, wipers ... no nothing;
won't make US or EU standards ;) . Who cares, it's for the Moon, Mars etc.

Oh wait! Is that the problem then, US or EU standards?

  • BRIC'S countries must get together and set new, more realistic standards for themselves.
 
I assume so. Petrol cars have more accelerating power than diesel ones. Helps for chases

Yours truly has the live experience of being part of a police chase in New Delhi.

Allow me. I hired an auto and we were on one of N. Delhi's fast semi-expressway type new road. It was early so it was empty. The auto got flagged by a policeman doing traffic duty, not a traffic cop.

The auto pretended to slow then, then sped ! We were quite a few lights away, when the above policeman not only caught up with his no-police markings bike, but forced the auto to stop. A rain of slaps followed. I went with the flow, and being a friend of the courts, gleefully landed one or two to the auto guy from the back also. Anyone who knows Delhi auto wallahs can get the glee part.

The auto guy was stunned, I said hello to the policeman, paid my bill silly me and left the auto.

- Used to serve diplomatic areas, politicians, VIP's, routine court work, patrol, show-off jobs etc.

Above type Royal Enfield Bullet in full police colours was the vehicle of choice for home delivery of my sister's passport, police commission charges extra @ Rs. 2000 (Pak. Rs. 4000).

Delhi Police PCR
Used for patrol mostly in tourist, commercial and residential areas. Gr8 service, they arrive in min.'s, or are always around the corner and great service. I still fail to see how they are any better, 1 for the price of a dozen bikes, than say 2 fully loaded policemen on the biggest model near 250 cc Bajaj Pulsar, Hero or Honda. In the Indian context, all policing should be with new age 250 cc type Bajaj & Hero.

Another time I was driving stone drunk with an open, 1/2 full bottle next to the shifter on a cold night and lost my way near the secretariat. I saw a posse of policeman around their Indian made Suzuki Gypsy and stumbled out of my car, went up to them and requested directions. They actually piloted me out, their Gypsy driving ahead.

Even though India have failed big time with Arjun & LCA, hats off to them on manufacturing these cars..... AWESOME!

Pakistan is seriously lacking behind in design and manufacturing cars.

Could anyone please shot list the vehicles that Pakistan can joint-venture with India or India can introduce in Pakistan?

Most if not all vehicles manufactured in India are good for Pakistan. Currently, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has all the right products for the Pakistani market. For example, the PakSuzuki Mehran could be replaced by the Maruti Alto 800, the Cultus by the new Maruti SX4, the old PakSuzuki Swift by the new Indian Swift ...and the list goes on. Toyota and Honda (India) have south/south-east Asia specific models like the Etios/Liva, Brio/upcoming Brio MPV etc., that the masses in Pakistan could do with instead of relying on overpriced junk peddled by Indus/Atlas. Most products (including passenger vehicles, SUVs and commercial vehicles) from the TATA and Mahindra stable will work well across the border, in a JV model.
