    Egyptian push into Sinai in 73 was successful until they moved out of their SAM umbrella, after that it was a disaster.

    There were no AD assets in Longewala 71. PAF was absent too but you have to realise that many navies also operate without Air cover using good AD systems. No doubt an air cover is essential but it should not compromise ground offensives.

    But when most of the PA's AD assets consists of ManPads, it does not give much confidence to a commander planning a deep thrust into enemy territory. But we will not be up against USAF so I agree ground offensives should not be compromised just for the lack of air cover rather AD needs to be improved to cover the armored advance.
