China hikes arms budget to $44 bn

Bad News For An Already-Worried India

Rajat Pandit | TNN

New Delhi: Even as India warily watches China take huge strides to expand its sphere of influence in the strategic Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the Indian defence establishment has been confronted with yet another unnerving bit of news: a whopping 17.8% hike in China’s military budget.
Already apprehensive of the rapid modernising the 2.5-million-strong People’s Liberation Army, which has substantially enhanced its ‘‘transborder capabilities’’, China’s announcement of a $44-billion defence budget caused yet another flutter of concern in the top echelons of Indian armed forces.
‘‘First, China conducted an anti-satellite weapon test in January. And now this. Though relations with China have been on an upswing over the last five-six years, we always have to keep China in mind,’’ said a senior officer.
‘‘We are unsure about its long-term aims. Though peace prevails along the still unresolved 4,057-km LAC, China does remain a long-term potential threat,’’ he added.
China, for one, continues to have deep strategic links with Pakistan, ranging from the joint development of the Gwadar deep-sea port in Baluchistan and the JF-17 ‘Thunder’ fighter jets to the covert cooperation in the nuclear and missile arena.
Then, of course, New Delhi remains apprehensive of China’s development of military infrastructure in Tibet and other border areas as well as its expanding military cooperation with countries in India’s backyard like Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Seychelles and the like.
‘‘In keeping with its ‘string of pearls’ strategy, China is especially focusing on expanding its arc of influence in the IOR to project its power overseas as well as protect its energy security,’’ said a Navy officer. India has taken some steps to counter Chinese moves by stepping up its own efforts to bolster military ties with Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Maldives but much more needs to be done.
‘‘Gifting a fast-attack craft or a patrol boat to Maldives (INS Tillanchang) or Seychelles (INS Tarmugli) is not enough, we have to enhance economic and military cooperation with all IOR countries on a sustained basis,’’ said another officer. India also has to learn how to dovetail military capabilities with long-term political objectives as far as defence expenditure is concerned. While Chinese defence budgets, which have seen a double-digit hike for almost two decades now, have a definite strategic underpinning to them, India’s defence expenditure remains an adhoc exercise most of the time.
The modest hike in India’s defence budget for the next fiscal, Rs 96,000 crore or around $22 billion, for instance, will barely take care of inflation, instead of any major jump in modernisation of the 1.3-million strong Indian forces.
The long-standing demand of Indian military planners to take defence spending to around 3% of the GDP still remains a mere pipedream, with the figure continuing to hover around 2.5%. Contrast this with China’s $44-billion budget, which some analysts hold is just onethird of the actual spending it does on its military.

why does the world cry when china increases its defence budget to $44 bn compare this with the defence budget of US $496 bn. the Bush terrorists administartion has asked for further increase to more than $700 bn. surpassing the WWII budget.

This is the tragedy actually. Any increase in the defense budget in Asian countries become a NEWS. While those who are actually killing several million people with thier weaponary are 'Peace-Loving' countries!

i think that chinese military budget is little compared with the us, we hv many problem to solve such as taiwan issue\east sea\southen sea. but we love peace. we want to deal with these issues on table.negotiating with others not using weapone

Thats the only thing China can do considering that Taiwan has the U.S support.

if CHINA reunite, i think that jp should be scared, because jp invaded CHINA in WW2. JP never appologize sincerely.

Suggestion to all people in this world, What happened in the Past happened in the past. Imperial/Communist China has killed a lot of its own people and its neighbours.China's military is long way behind most military's. The only way Chinese pilots shoot down other planes, is actually by ramming into them.lol

I think the chinese are rapidly modernizing their fleet of aircrafts. I think with in the next few years they will be the dominant airforce of the region.
One more thing China recently made to different aircrafts and now they are being inducted into the airforce. Hmmmmm........when was any plane made by india actually inducted into its airforce.
just wondering

Seriously dude, Dont try to flamebait.
There was no need of bringing India into this, I have been adivced my the Admins to make their jobs easier, It would be great if you help them out too.
You wanna talk about India, make a thread and I will come there.

Chinese Airforce cant be the dominant airforce in the region, for the mere fact they have more numbers to replace, which will take them a minimum of 10-15yrs. The technology available to them is seriously limited and they have to work from the ground up. There is a long way to go for China before they even reach Russian Standards.
They are limited cuz of European and American ban on sale of Technology to them, as well as Russian reluctance to sell them high end technology. Your best example would be N001 radar was authourized for them when the Chinese asked for the N011 for their SU-30MKK

you indian people, always says:buy the good weapons,do you know, you can not buy the best. usa and russia can give you the best,it is impossible.so ,you want to become top, depend on yourself. india spends much money in buying russia and european flighter, tank.i think that you spend money on your own military industrials. perhaps after one decade, other countries should pay money to buy the good things from you.
to buy, you willnot buy a strong country.

pak and india, should become intimate friends.coz you are so close, share the similar culture.you live in same country before 1947. donot conflict. we all need peace and harmony.

Can you please reply to me in proper english. Thank you.

Dont attack My FLAG ; attack my message and I will debate with you on that.

Last I checked, With give you due credit to Chinese Economy; Indian Economy is based on Knowledge rather than making cheap toys and machinery's. That doesnt mean we are anywhere close to greatness. Indian Military Shipbuilding, Aeronautics other areas are doing good progress, WE DO SOMETHING CALLED TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER, WHICH YOU DONT GET IN MOST CASES....

Thank you

Adarsh
