Hi,

This question arises in the mind of every single Pakistani but we do not know the point of each other, so i thought lets have some discussion on this issue on this forum where peoples of all four provinces and 4 territories are there and who can realize the importance of this project and share their opinion regarding this.

What do you guyz think? should kalabagh dam be built? if yes then why? and if no then why?

it should be Build When we finished all other DAMs .. then the people of Pakistan realizes the importance of DAMS ....

We Really Need to Educate our Nation

The recent flood in Indus River of 2010 played havoc in Pakistan and specially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). The high flood level at Nowshera was 961ft, which was 10ft higher than the record flood of 1929. The high flood level at Barotha Power Complex (BPC) was 922ft which was higher than the designed level of 902ft of BPC. Had there been Kalabagh Dam on 28/7/2010. The high flood level at BPC would have been gone up to 947ft (922ft+25ft) which would have caused loss of total generation at BPC and devastation in KPK would have created Tsunami like condition.
In order to save KPK and BPC from future floods, after the construction of Kalabagh Dam, the expert engineers of KPK Mr. Fathehullah Khan, the former chairman IRSA, has proposed to build 100feet low Kalabagh Dam with overhead barrage of 60’ which would generate 2000 MW to 6000 MW of power on the run of the river and the project may be completed in 3 years. This proposal of the expert engineer published in the daily DAWN on 26/12/2011. Mr Faqir Ahmad Paracha, who is an eminent engineer, has supported the above proposal on 1/1/2012 published in the daily DAWN, may be with the intention that something is better than nothing.
A similar proposal of Mr. Fathehullah Khan has already been supported by the writer of this column which was published in the daily Mashriq Peshawar on 19/9/2010. However the proposal may kindly be considered by the concerned authority for implementation in the best interest of the nation for the flowing reasons.
1. To save Nowshera city and BPC from devastation of floods, WAPDA has assured to keep the Kalabagh Dam reservoir level at 859’ on 30th July every year. For this purpose the Mid Sluicing Gates of Kalabagh Dam would be operated for releases more than 12 lac cusecs discharge which would be dangerous and would not save the flood affected population of D.I Khan, Mianwali, Kot Adu and Sindh etc. in the monsoon season. The low KD is the only solution.
2. BPC would be saved from attack of sediment delta of Kalabagh Dam Reservoir.
3. The free flow drainage, from Peshawar valley, would not be obstructed with stored water and sediment delta of K.D.

4. Generation of power of BPC would not reduce with K.D Reservoir.
5. KPK would be able to use its share of water, unutilized since 1991.
6. Sindh would get its due share of water through the proposed barrage and from the run of river used for power generation.

this is a dumb thread because its OBVIOUS it should be built!!! built DAMs now save the future of your children!

Kalabagh dam and every other dam shall be built to control the waste of river water to the sea.
It will control both drought and flooding.

In near future Pakistan is going to face extreme shortage of water and Pakistan is primarily an agricultural state.

Our farmers stand to loose most, with no water control.

While NWFP stand the increased risk of flooding by the global warming.

This year there had been manifold increase in avalanches in Pakistani Alps.

While glaciers had been shrinking regularly from quite some years.

Last but not the least Indian dams on Pakistani rivers put Pakistan at mercy of India.

Pakistan.. not only need to build dam but also need to get rid of Indian dams, otherwise all efforts are waste.

Oh, I forgot about electricity.... yes dams are source of cheap electricity... as well.

yes the kalabagh dam must be built , along with a proper water management with efficiency is extremely important for Pakistan

kalabagh dam
1.cost half of any dam due to its location
2. Half cost of transmission
3. Easy financing as world bank is obliged to finance it by indus basin treaty
4. quick construction nearly half time of any other dam..

.

and any idiot should know that its practically impossible that nowshera be remotely effected reason ? because the ghazi brotha project of 1400 MW is 10 km down stream of nowshera..would we sink such a massive project?

The question my dear friend is not that whether we should built Kala Bagh Dam or not. The question is When will we start giving National interest more importance than our personal, political or regional interests?

I will never let kalabagh dam be built unless i get commission from the project....;)

The problem with KBD is that it has become a very politicized issue. While it can be built after national consesus. But I think we should now move forward and leave KBD for some point in distant future. We should concentrate on many other resorviours which can be built 1) in short time 2) in small finances.

well this thread was started in 2009. There are so many things happened since that period... Floods destroyed half Pakistan and we are still suffering from the aftermath of floods. The situation has worsen so the question is changed...

Kalabagh or better alternatives we need dams without further delay
