Thank you for sharing out this story. But you've reached a wrong conclusion. 1962 happenned because Nehru's aggressiveness on personally supporting Dalai Lama and implementing forward policy. It is the exact opposite of your conclusion, Nehru thought China was too weak and could not do anything.

I think Moral of the story: Let cool heads manage the countries and always prefer dialog first.

Exactly right.

Indians think Nehru was weak and passive.

In fact he was very agressive against us (hosting our separatist groups in 1959, and the Forward Policy in 1962). But he was also weak, which is why he couldn't get away with it.

He was agressive and weak, the worst combination.

Wasn' t this operation checkerboard?

nice moral anyway, applicable to anyone

india has several small neighbours. are any of them scared of the indian military might?

so no. this moral mostly applies to china

Stop the crap.. 1962 happened because you were not supposed to be there in Tibet at all.. Tibet belonged to Tibetians and you attacked to occupy their territory.. India did the right thing to move the forces to border but that idiot Nehru did one of the so many of his mistakes by not to let army deploy the regiments in full strength and by not letting IAF into the scenario.. Chinese would have ran away if we had larger deployments on our border.. They were encouraged to attack seeing only 12000 soldiers and 80000 of Chinis attacked them only to run back to their holes on realizing more deployments were on their way..

Well, despite our conventional superiority , ever wonder why Pakistan attempted Kargil?

actually its like this "Nehru thought China was NOT weak but still WOULD not do anything"

Chinese think nehru was agressive. its a very wrong conclusion. what nehru did for PRC is not known among you people. for eg: When Japanese invaded and raped u guys, it was nehru who sent indian doctors to help the chinese.

All chinese members: PLEASE REFER VALID SOURCES AND LEARN ABOUT WHAT NEHRU DID FOR CHINA

Nehru's tragedy is that he was burdened by a self-assuming 3rd world leader title:

"Nehru attempted to mediate in the Korean War and during the 1950's crisis in Vietnam. He was idolised by the Indian population and his death in May 1964, robbed the Third World of its natural leader."

With this mind set, it is not possible for him to have talks with China with mutual respect as later Indian leader do. Otherwise the two countries would've had settled on current LAC as Zhou Enlai suggested before 1960.

We have issues with them, but none of them are afraid of indian military(except pakistan, buts thats starting to change)

Nepal is not afraid of indian military
Bhutan is not afraid of indian military
Bangladesh is not afraid of indian military
Srilanka is not afraid of indian military
Maldives is not afraid of indian military
Burma is not afraid of indian military

Its a testament of indian pacifism.

Now take china's neighbours. what do we have?:azn:

Since when does IAF fleet consist of just LCA? :cheesy: and yeah cleared IOC. babysteps.

quantity-wise? nope. overall? with the right tactics and bit of luck, maybe

besides indian armed forces have a record of having spectacular kill ratios

i can show them to u if u want
like India has 'quality' force, 1000 plus crashes cannot be achieved by goods quality maintanence and spare parts

Chinese will remember Indian's help during WWII, Dr. Dwarkanath S. Kotnis is a famous figure in China and there's medical institutes named after him. But it is also true that Nehru personally met Dalai lama in New Delhi to show his personal support, you can find this picture all over the internet (I've posted before). And forward policy is also a well known fact. When I said he was aggressive, I meant in 1962's context.

There's almost zero report on 1962 war in Chinese media and it is not in text books either. All sources we see are Western sources or Indian sources.

So important to all of us, that if he did not exist — as Voltaire said of God — he would have to be invented

nothing compared to gandhi though

It is with your exact mindset 1962 happenned and even today both India and China still pay heavy political and economic price for the border issue.

For the record, could you find me any official map, made by ANY country after 1700, that shows Tibet as an independent country?

Here, check the Global Peace Index. :D

On this index we are ranked #80, and India is ranked #135. :cheesy:

That is 55 ranks apart!

We haven't had a war with anyone for the past 30 years. India on the other hand even threatened to attack Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks in 2008, and the Inda-Pakistan border is known as "the most dangerous border in the world" (from The Economist).
