What's new

It is time to learn Chinese

Primitive? you should compare Characters to english words. At least we don't have to invent a million words for a million new things.

Hard landing soft landing maybe but that's gonna be 20 years later when the US kicked China off the world 2nd largest economy just like the Japanese kicked China off the 3rd some years before.:P

well the thing is the amount of stuff a country builds in 50 yrs china has built all the stuff in just 15 yrss. this is incredible speed of growth. bt the problem is that now ur country knows that a hard landing is inevitable thats is why growth rated will be slashed every year by some %. if china keeps building all these expressaways, vacant cities and buildings etc etc with printed money, time will come to pay for all of it in real money and china doesnt have 6 trillion to pay. world has never seen a country growing at 9% with over 100% debt. japan is phucked right now with 210% debt. their economy has started to shrink.

really,China's strength is on her manufacture and superb infrastructure.

... long list of irrelevancy over the larger scheme of thing, although I'll single out the last two:

china is the 5th largest fast food consumer market.
china is the 5th largest Ferrari car consumer market.

Utter disgrace if you ask me.

BTW did you grow taller with that long list?

As I said, there is no need to compile a billion excuses to "encourage" others to learn Chinese.

China is way bigger than Japan and the world witnesses something that has never happened in the world history.every repeat experience has their first time occurence.

problem in Chinese is the alphabet .
when a language have this feature
the standard Chinese writing system uses a non-alphabetic script with an alphabet for supplementary use.[1] There is no original alphabet native to China.
then it will be hard for the others who have accustomed to alphabet based scripts to accept it.

honestly who wants to learn 3-4 thousands out of tens of thousands character to be considered
have reached a functional literacy for daily uses . let compare it with all of English 26 character or
Arabic 28 character or Farsi 32 character .

and this is another problem

In china you are allowed to invent your own character

Given the number of chinese on this forum... and elsewhere. & the lack of non-chinese forummers on "chinese" language forums ... it is obvious who is learning what.

the per capital income of chinese who know a non-chinese language (esp english) is 23 times more than the chinese who know only "chinese".

hongkong already lost a huge part of it's "scintillation" as the chinese mainlanders flooded hongkong .... the business in hongkong is now fast receding to the so-called "red-chips" only.

hongkong's loss is singapore's gain .... which is an all-english country now.

poor hongkong ....

ha,actually Hongkong just being ranked the top global financial center, ending century old US and UK dominance of this title.

and you mentioned Singapore, another Chinese speaking country dominated by Chinese culture.

not really.

there's about 3000 characters needed for HIGH level speech. Most of the characters in use are for very specific proper nouns.

You can read a paper with about 1000 characters, and Chinese is "half phonetic".

if you think Chinese is hard, Japanese is 1000x harder because it has all the characters Chinese has with a much more cumbersome grammar. Chinese grammar is intuitive English style sentence structure (subject verb object) and the easiest grammar ever (add 了/过 suffix for past tense, 会 prefix for future).

you're out of the world ... with no knowledge of facts on the ground.

hongkong is flooded with mainlanders .... and off course the hongkongers regret the decline.

as for business it's only on china business that hongkong is surviving .... if the trend continues, hongkong will be just another shanghai !

as for singapore .... you need to come to singapore to know how a world different it is from hongkong.

(also check the number of people wanting to relocate from hongkong to singapore) !!!:

btw.. if you are indeed from beijing .... you are yourself giving a proof that even chinese are trying move away from mandarin..... off course good for them (because the reasons are economic).

but the trend is clear.

what?yes i m from Beijing and I speak Beijing hua,(a kind of Mandarin),are you talking about me myself trying to move away from Mandarin?what are you talking about?

I had been to Honkong and singpore last year....Hongkong is already a crowded place...I never seen so many people even I live in India....on other hand Singapore is heaven on earth

as for Hongkong's global rankings, there are tons of them in every aspect,no Indian cities come close to Hongkong anywhere
Google

Singapore is heaven on earth

it is still a Chinese society,I have many friends and relatives are Singaporeans,Chinese never feel foreign living in Singapre, everything is just like China.

Japan and Germany Are jokes. Japan has no independence. No way it was going to be challenging American power, neither will India or brazil as they have no independence. America will force India and brazil to accept something like plaza accord just like it was forced upon Japan. America has brazil, India, Japan, Germany under control. They will do whatever America tells them. Only china and Russia have independence from America, so we can challenge them, but Russian economy is too resource dependent. That leaves only china, china is far too powerful and united to be controlled, so the Americans will try their best to contain china.

Only china can truly challenge American dominance in the 21st century.

As a fellow Chinese, I really don't like your way of expressing things... I think it is necessary to show respect of other countries. It's very rude and unnecessary to call other countries "joke" . Where is the courtesy we Chinese have had for more than 2000 years?

given the time you are spending on this forum alone ..... shows a trend.

you are not a "strange" beijinger !!! .... and everyone isn't on defence forums (hopefully).

btw.. i am not blaming you. the chinese who want to rise (economically) .... are moving away from chinese.... otherwise the only option is to walk to the factory floor for slave labour.

i have no issues .... if you choose the path that helps you economically. but, why are you misguiding other people ??

Rankings: Top 20 global cities of 2020, projected

By Andrew Nusca | April 18, 2011, 7:43 AM PDT

The fourth Knight Frank Global Cities Survey was recently published by Citi Private Bank, designed to monitor “city-level power shifts” by assessing global markets for investment opportunities and influence on business leaders worldwide.

The survey offered a list of the top 25 global cities of 2011, but also offered a number of other rankings — so many that we had to break them up into separate posts.

Below, the list predicting what would be the “world’s leading cities in 10 years’ time.”

Your Top 20 global cities of 2020, projected:

1. New York
2.London
3.Shanghai
4.Beijing
5.Hong Kong
