New Delhi/Rameswaram (TN): India has asked its mission in Colombo to take up the issue of 16 fishermen being allegedly injured by the Sri Lankan Navy with the authorities in that county.

Sixteen fishermen from Rameswaram were injured in an alleged mid-sea attack by Sri Lankan naval personnel while fishing near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in Palk Straits.

Ministry of External Affairs has asked its mission in Colombo to take it up the issue with Sri Lankan authorities concerned, official spokesperson in the Ministry said.

Sixteen fishermen from Rameswaram were injured in an alleged mid-sea attack by Sri Lankan navy.

The Lankan naval personnel had on Saturday attacked the fishermen with wooden logs, stones and bottles, resulting in bone fracture of a 25-year-old youth and serious injuries to others, according to police.

The youth, who suffered the fracture, said it was a "brutal" attack by the Lankan navalmen who surrounded 25 boats of the fishermen. "They damaged the boats, snapped the fishing nets and lashed out at us with logs and pelted stones," he said.

Meanwhile, a Fisheries Department official described the attack as a violation of human rights.

Local fishermen association leaders Sesu and Devaraj said the Sri Lankans, who had come in a naval ship, intimidated and frightened the fishermen.

The two slammed the Centre for remaining "mute spectator" to recurring attacks on fishermen of Tamil Nadu.

OUR GOVERMENT IS A TOOTHLESS SHARK IN THIS MATTER. I WILL TELL U WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT
SRILANKA WILL ALLEGEDLY DENY SUCH INCIDENT TOOK PLACE..OUR GOVT WILL SAY "OK THEN BYE BUDDY". THEN CASE CLOSED ..THATS ALL.
THE SAME THING IS BEEN HAPPENNING FOR PAST 2 DECADES AND 500 INDIAN FISHERMEN WERE KILLED ALREADY AND 1000s PERMENANTLY INJURED OR DISSABLED.

I say a naval base in TN's East coast could teach Lankans a lesson instantaneously.

I say we should deliberately keep some fishing boats very near to the border line with some destroyers beyond visibility. The moment they fire on the fishermen, we fire our Brahmos. A hard spank is what is required by the SL navy presently.

Their navy actually thinks that some kind of blockade which they created during the last days of LTTE makes them some kind of super duper navy. They should be brought down to earth.

We don't need to create some base. That would be too much fro SL navy. Our 1/2 destroyers fully loaded is enough for their entire navy.

Now GOI is stooping low in front of lanka:hitwall:..why they have kept italian guards??leave them too..park one or 2 frigates near lanka..then see..:hitwall:

Lankans are justified to safeguard their territorial waters from illegal Indian fishermen. Why can't
indians fish in their own waters. India is no US and won't get away by bullying in the region.
Indian ocean is not your personal property. Heck the name should be changed to Afro-Asian ocean
as it has coast with majority asian and african states.

oh.....now they somewhat escaped with wounds but I wish those fisherman get killed in near future. By the way tamils life is too cheap nowadays so no issues. Long live India-SL frienship:cheers:

cheers.............

If you agree with that then why the hell do you guys get all riled up when BSF does the same thing to safeguard our territory from illegal Bangladeshi immigrants ??

In this case the men were fishing near the IMBL and even if they have "accidentally" crossed over that wasn't the way to treat them. Those kind of incidents happens everywhere & all the time.

But I have never heard of people "accidentally" climbing fences and crossing international borders with their luggage and family..have you ??

These fishermen are getting killed/hurt due to the idiotic decision of Indiragandhi ceding the Katchatheevu - an island near Srilanka but belonged to India and the waters are rich with fishes. Karunanidhi who was CM at that time was threatened with Corruption cases and that scum fell in line. Now the fishermen when they attempt to fish near Kachatheevu gets killed.

The fact is the any territory to be ceded needs the ratification of the two houses of the parliament which was the not the case here. Not sure who would take up these fishermen's case unlike the Kerala CM who took a stand against the Italians providing no maneuver for the Indian govt.

What's the reason to use wooden logs, stones and bottles:undecided: and from where they managed stones in middle of sea :undecided:

You are blowing out the issue here.No point of comparing this with US.If someone violated the Maritime boudary they should have put them behind the bar. Each day there are heavy influx of Bangladeshi towards Indian border so what BSf will do simply shoot them. What you say brother?

Please coment only if u have insight of the matter, after indipendence in 1974 a treaty was signed between india and srilanka -by that the island Kachchativu was given to srilanka by india, Under the treaty agreement of 1974, Indian fishermen have rights to rich fishing grounds in the territorial waters of Sri Lanka around Kachchativu. so indian fishermen have the right to fish there .... buddy.:disagree:

I think its time India initiates regime change in Sri lanka , then take over the country and add her to the Union.....certain things should have been done during our independence.
