what about the current VCAS?

dont know but Rao is going to get PIA headship...

I think he will be ok with PIA, one has to understand that while he was not the best the AF has to offer.. he is regarded as a good officer(if not a gentleman..those with insider rumors will understand :P) nonetheless.
He was ACAS(ops) and ran the system well.. that may work well for the PIA ala Nur Khan(or not)

A simple question...Do we need to discuss this too? What is the outcome of this discussion.?..any chap commenting about the final selection...most probably criticizing the decision...what else?

IDEALLY

Someone who can say " Bring those planes , violating Pakistani airspace DOWN"

Yeah that would be ideal person who can give out these orders don't need a USA puppy in our forces

cute

Americans will only violate airspace where they can get away with it
and where they can get away with it they wont get any oppostion at all no matter how much that country huffs and puffs.

its Jamhuriat for you and Gillani says that we never fought with anyone when there was Jamhuriat in Pakistan.
so it doesnt matter how much diehard and fearless chief we get.

PAF will be made Afghanistan airforce I am sorry to say. I think USA can make pretty much all airforces Afghanistan airforce except one or 2 countries. yes it includes India and China too ;)

I am quite confident that the new ACM will be on merit basis as well as he will Insha ALLAH be very faithful with ISLAM and PAKISTAN. Hopefully it will push the production of Super Mushak, K-8 (Block-II development possible) and JF-17 with other UAVs programs. Moreover the plan of expanding PAC with a much bigger and better facility than KAMRA in Sindh and hopefully it will be completed very soon. Insha ALLAH.

Theoretically all officers (excluding from non-fighting branches such as medical, maintenance etc.) reaching 3 star rank should be capable of running their respective services. Therefore appointment of the Chief must be political to some extent.

Let us hope that PPP Gov't appoints a popular PAF Chief.

Who will rule the Air?
February 17, 2012

ISLAMABAD: The top five air marshals are in the run to become the next air chief, as the Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman will retire by March 18 this year after completing his three-year term.

The president and prime minister would appoint the new air chief much before the actual their heads to appoint new Air Chief much before the actual date of retirement of Air Chie Marshal Suleman on March 18 and the date coincides with the completion of second one year extension of Pakistan super spy master, Director-General Inter-Services intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha.

If the seniority principle is upheld, similar to appointment of Chief of Naval Staff some months back, the senior-most Air Marshal should get the presidential nod to succeed CAS ACM Rao Suleman, said a top official privy to the consultations being held to look into the dossiers of several top officials of the dynamic and potent Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

Presently, Vice Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt is on top of the seniority list and being Vice Chief of the Air Staff he stands bright prospects to command PAF, now having received and equipped with several multirole American F-16s aircraft.

When asked to the top official about the chances of giving extension to CAS ACM Rao Qamar Suleman, he categorically stated that in the existing scenario he stands no chance to be given extension, though it is up to the President who can do so if he is advised by the Prime Minister to that effect.

I think the principle of seniority would prevail again this time in the case of appointment of new Air Chief, a source told The News, who added that the present acting Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi would deal this matter purely on merit keeping in view the future requirement of commanding the potent PAF. She is unlikely to be influenced by any outsider, and there are bright chances of dealing this subject purely on merit, said the source.

In the Air Force, many officers are talking about the new Air Chief and that would happen most likely before the current month is out or in the first week of March this year. However, for the sake of seniority Chairman PAC Kamra Air Marshal Farhat Hussain Khan is second on the ladder and like Air Marshal Butt, he had a rich experience including Chief Project Director JF-17 and served as Air Attache in India some time back.

Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Operations) Air Marshal Waseem ud Din is third on the seniority ladder. Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Administration) Air Marshal Mohammad Hassan is 4th on the seniority list of senior air force officials, and it is followed by Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Support) Air Marshal Asim Suleiman.

Who will rule the air?

Anyone who is the senior most should be appointed, but wish no one gets extension as it spoils the institutions

Somone who knows what his priority is Protect Pakistan Air Space not sleep in bed when freaking helicopters are flying in with terrrorist in and out of Pakistan

No tradition of PAF chief seeking extension: Qamar

Muhammad Saleh Zaafir

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) will have its new chief in the first week of next month, as current Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman has decided to call it a day on the 17th of next month.

He has pledged not to ask for an extension in service, as he will not accept the same if offered. In an exclusive chat here at the PM’s House, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman told The News that he had fully trained the officers to replace him and a line of command was prepared to take up the replacement with fair amount of confidence.

“The PAF has no tradition that its chief seeks extension in service with one exception since it has not been viewed as in good taste,” he remarked.

To a query, Rao Qamar Suleman, who was made CAS in the process of ascension and superseded three senior air Marshals Shahid Latif, the vice chief of air staff; Khalid Chaudhry, chairman Pakistan Aeronautical Complex; and Hifazat Ullah Khan, deputy chief of air staff (personnel) on March 18, 2009, said that he had given his mind to the government for his replacement. He said that Air Marshal Tahir Rafiq Butt was the senior most in the line of succession as he was currently Vice Chief of Air Staff (VCAS).

Interestingly Air Marshal Hifazat was made the vice chief of air staff ten days after his supersession on 29 March 2009 and he attained superannuation in 2010 and retired from the service. Air Marshal Tahir Butt became VCAS in October 2010. Air Marshal Shahid Latif is known for his intellectual superiority as he was the architect of JF-17 Thunder multi-role fighter plane that he developed with the Chinese collaboration. He opted to leave the PAF on appointment of Rao Qamar Suleman as CAS.

The appointment of the CAS will be made by the president on advice of the prime minister. It will be the second time that the CAS to be picked up by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani since Rao Qamar Suleman was also his choice. Rao Qamar Suleman is nephew of political stalwart of Punjab and former senior minister late Rao Sikandar Iqbal.

The VCAS, Air Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt who is on the top among the contenders for commanding the PAF for next three years was commissioned in General Duties (Pilot) Branch of PAF on March 6, 1977. He served as a fighter pilot in various squadrons of PAF, and has also qualified Flying Instructors’, Combat Commanders’, Armed Forces War and Turkish War Courses. During his career he has commanded a fighter squadron, a fighter wing, an operational PAF Base and a Regional Air Command. In his last assignment, he was serving as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Personnel), at Air Headquarters, Islamabad. He is recipient of Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military), Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Tamgha-i-Basalat.

It is widely believed that PAF under ACM Rao Qamar Suleman performed better in the so-called war against terror than his predecessor.
