Overseas Chinese: (The third-largest economy in the World)

What do you expect from them? They do nothing but tell lies. Telling lies is a pathological trait amongst Chinese people. Sorry to offend any Chinese person reading this but i'm pretty sure even you guys will acknowledge this. Your culture views lies, deceit and plagiarism as being cunning and intelligent. Elsewhere in the world its viewed with disdain.

Ok first illegal immigrants. The fact is that the S Koreans are much more illegal immigrants that the Chinese.

Now you bring up plagiarism, conveniently forgetting that SK is the hell of Plagiarism.

...

Korea has a deserved reputation for plagiarism, but it can surprisingly hard to provide definitive reasons for why this is the case. For example, had I been asked, I would have ventured that it was a combination of:

• the discouraging of creativity and the overwhelming use of rote-learning in Korean schools.

• the emphasis on results rather than processes, as evidenced by the university you attend being considered more important than what you learn there, or alternatively TOEIC scores being used by companies to select new recruits regardless of their actual spoken English ability, or if the job even requires it.

• the reality that university is widely regarded as a brief respite between studying for the entrance exam and corporate life, with much less of a workload than high school.

• a chronic lack of funds meaning that universities are extremely reluctant to expel students.

• and the Korean route to academic advancement, which far from having the egalitarian relationships that prevail in the West, can involve an almost slave-like dependency on professors by postgraduate students. The tasks they can be expected to perform for them can range from the mundane – like making their coffee – to doing the bulk of professors’ actual work, such as the marking of undergraduate essays, and usually for little or even no financial compensation. In such circumstances, it is no surprise to learn that Korean newspapers regularly feature cases of prominent academics being caught plagiarizing their students’ work.

Hwang Woo-suk (Korean: 황우석, born December 15, 1952)[1] is a South Korean veterinarian and researcher. He was a professor of theriogenology and biotechnology at Seoul National University (dismissed on March 20, 2006) who became infamous for fabricating a series of experiments, which appeared in high-profile journals, in the field of stem cell research. Until November 2005, he was considered one of the pioneering experts in the field, best known for two articles published in the journal Science in 2004 and 2005 where he reported to have succeeded in creating human embryonic stem cells by cloning.

On May 12, 2006, Hwang was charged with embezzlement and bioethics law violations after it emerged much of his stem cell research had been faked.[2]...

I think Mao's enter of Korea War killed no less Koreans. That's why Mao is hated by you. It's very natural.

Also Mao supported NK, to make NK your pain in the @ss.

And the problem is you still can do nothing against NK, even though NK blatantly shelled your island, killed your soldiers and sank you navy boat.

Well, live with your tough luck, buddy!

Tough luck!

NK sank your war ship and you don't dare to do anything.

NK shelled you island, killed your soldiers and you like a beaten cat, no, beaten rat, and dared to do nothing.

Now the little Kim doesn't want to deal with you, and you don't dare to do anything.

Poor S Korean!

They're not listening to a true American.

100 pushups for them.

Wow you support the massacre of a Chinese community with totally different cultural roots to the mainland Chinese just to justify your own means. I doubt any Indonesia Chinese have ever said anything against you in this forum. You're truly pathetic.

Funny thing is if a Korean family happen to be in Indonesia at the time they would get slaughtered too. But morons like you would never understand that.

Many S Koreans are inhumanly brutal. That’s how that culture breads the kind of murderer like Virginia Tech serious killer Seung-Hui Cho. Study shows that Mr. Cho lacked the love from family. He was treated cruelly since young age. Thus he nurtured hatred against human being.

I was visiting Forbidden City in Beijing 2005. When entering the huge gates, two files SK children about age 5 or 6 going in together with me. Given that age, children are bound to be nasty. What the S Korean teacher (female!) did was to bite furiously on the little girl’s arm, leaving deep wounds on it.

Dude, that’s an animal behavior. If that’s the way the S Koreans teach their children, no wonder there are so many cold heart murderers produced.

Thus, I'm not surprised that this SKorean would love massacre as fantastic.

I hate to correct our Chinese friends but Overseas Chinese do not constitute the third largest economy in the world by any measure. Today, the third largest economy in the world is Japan with a GDP in excess of $5 trillion, as a comparison. Overseas Chinese do not earn that much or more in a year.

The statistics regarding Indonesian Chinese are also wrong. I doubt if they can control 20% of the economy. Do you think only 3% of Indonesia's 240 million people, control 70% of its $850 billion+ economy? Is it even possible? Do you realize how high their GDP per capita would be if this was true?

Do not believe in these outrageous estimates by pawn-shop owners, loan sharks or gamblers. They may control 70% of their own poverty-filled neighbourhood, at best, but to control 70% of Indonesia's entire economy is beyond them. Facts do not support such outrageous claims.

Being submitted brutally by Japan since the 19th century and then the Korean war horrors made them sadistic.

By the 1950s virtually all retail stores in Indonesia were owned by ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs, whose businesses ranged from selling groceries to construction material. Discontentment soon grew among indigenous merchants who felt they could not compete with ethnic Chinese businesses.[110] Under pressure from indigenous merchants the government enacted the Benteng program and Presidential Regulation 10 of 1959, which imposed restrictions on ethnic Chinese importers and rural retailers. Ethnic Chinese businesses persisted, due to their integration into larger networks throughout Southeast Asia, and their dominance continued despite continuous state and private efforts to encourage the growth of indigenous capital.[111]

Government policies shifted dramatically after 1965 and became more favorable toward economic expansion. In an effort to rehabilitate the economy, the government turned to those possessing the capability to invest and expand corporate activity. Ethnic Chinese capitalists, called the cukong, were strengthened by the military, which emerged as the dominant political force after 1965.[111] Indigenous businessmen once again demanded greater investment support from the government in the 1970s, but each legislation fell short of reducing ethnic Chinese dominance.[112] In a 1995 study published by the East Asia Analytical Unit of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, approximately 73 percent of the market capitalization value of publicly listed companies (excluding foreign and state-owned companies) were owned by Chinese Indonesians

Additionally, they owned 68 percent of the top 300 conglomerates and nine of the top ten private sector groups at the end of 1993.[113] This figure propagated the general belief that ethnic Chinese—then estimated at 3 percent of the population—controlled 70 percent of the economy.[114][115][116] Amid disputes surrounding the accuracy of this figure, it was evident that a wealth disparity existed along ethnic boundaries. The image of an economically powerful ethnic Chinese community was further fostered by the government through its inability to dissociate itself from the patronage networks.[117] The Hokchia group dominated the ethnic Chinese business scene during the Suharto government, with other groups emerging after 1998.[51]

The top five conglomerates in Indonesia prior to the 1997 Asian financial crisis—the Salim Group, Astra International, the Sinar Mas Group, Gudang Garam, and the Lippo Group—were all owned by ethnic Chinese, with annual sales totaling Rp112 trillion (US$47 billion).

Can you use a better source than Wikipedia? Indonesia's economy is around $850 billion. 70% of that amount is around $595 billion. Can 3% of 240 million Indonesians = 7.2 million Indonesians earn $595 billion in a year? Their GDP per capita would be around $82000 a year! I have seen many Indonesian Chinese, most of them are poorer than their Singaporean Chinese counterparts. There are a few billionaires, but overall, the Indonesian Chinese are not that well off.

Hey everyone look at me!!!! I am EAsian, a rabid Chinese nationalist with an inferiority complex who lives in Japan of all places. China is the best!!! Thats why I don't live there. I will defend China from all enemies online by using such concepts as freedom of speech, net neutrality and human rights. Things entirely missing and devoid of in China.

China is the best!!!

<typical nationalistic Chinese diaspora logic>

so you live in the US because you believe in the greatness of South Korea.

I am not sure. Abdurrahman Wahid is from a respectable Muslim Indonesian family with some Chinese ancestors, but most of his ancestors and his father and mother were probably not Chinese. Yudhyono does not look Chinese at all.

i think we as members from other countries should be proud of the achievements of ethnic chinese in other SE Asian countries. we have a lot to learn from them....today india / indians are at a stage where chinese were in the past...chinese have worked hard to be at this level....same way other indians in SE Asian countries too need to work hard and make a name for themselves...

for other chinese / ethnic chinese bros here...

indians are slow to start with....they will take sometime to catch up...by the time you all are tired saying / typing and spewing venom on indians.....in next 20-30 years, we will be shoulder to shoulder in future.
