Iran actually has S200 an older system that is still capable of hiting high altitue flying planes

Article :BBC News - The 'unravelling relationship' between Russia and Iran

Moscow has earned billions, helping Iran bypass US and European Union (EU) sanctions.

Air defence

And yet, last month, Moscow supported UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

Last week, President Dmitry Medvedev even publicly questioned the Iranian programme which is moving into a position that may allow Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons.

Previously, Russian officials maintained that there was no proof that Iran was developing nuclear weapons.

In December 2005, Russia agreed to sell Iran long-range S-300 anti-aircraft missiles - 40 to 60 launchers with four missile tubes each, radars, and control stations, worth some $1bn (£650m).

Together with the shorter-range Tor M1 and the older super-long-range S-200 already provided by Russia, Iran could build a solid anti-aircraft shield able to defend its nuclear facilities against a possible US or Israeli assault, and inflict serious damage to the attacking force.

**A reverse engineered S-200 system with Iranain upgraded radar
& upgrade would be possible

We all know Iran can reverse engineer radars so its not completely out of ordinary the question remain to integrate some of the newer tracking systems with existing missile technology they have

The S300 while it would have been nice but 30-40 of these used in large quantity would still poose a danger to any high flying plane

This post from 2008 points to Iranain already having Modified S-200 in service

Iran Test-Fires Modified S-200 Missile
Iran’s Air Force today test-fired its S-200 surface-to-air missile defense system. IRINN quoted IRIAF Commander Brig. Gen. Ahmad Miqani as saying the Air Force had made its own modifications to the S-200 system. Gen. Miqani added that the exercise was to test the efficiency level of passive defense systems against foreign threat.

The S-200 is a forty-year old medium- to high-altitude mobile surface-to-air missile system designed by the Russians. Its principal purpose is to target and destroy aircraft and cruise missiles.

Iran reported last month an agreement with Russia to purchase the advanced S-300 systems. Iran has already purchased TOR-M1 system from Russia.

Awesome propaganda Video awesome beat the opening was bit dramatic but good glimps of advancement in Iran

Good luck with hitting B-2s coming in from San Gracia. Those have the reported cross section of a small bird. Btw those are mock launchers. ^^^^

The system would provide a good defense against F-16/F-15s though.

Interesting defence news , wonder if Russians /Chines provided stuff
it would be a great suprise for any airforce no doubt ...

Hmm the S-200 is still can be reverse engineered when you have your own engineers , god knows what they can enhance ... my oh my

I wonder why Pakistan has not got hands on Long range missiles concerning issue even iran has the air defence for long distance crafts

The article doesn't take into account how effective U.S. and Israeli ECW capabilities are. However Iran's most credible deterrent is the Tor M-1. And they have such limited numbers of those they would quickly be overwhelmed.

Well US is powerful nation , no doubt , but I think Iran , is really not worth the stress - they are just interested in economy , time to move on .... WW4 would not be ideal don't care how stupid of person iranian leadership was but they are doing stuff in their own country , Israel is a bit unstable

I am sure US generals have a plan as well but peace would be ideal
economy can't take much more stress might crumble I am talking world wide economy

I was bit disapointed that Turkey & Brazil's offer to exchange any fuel was not taken up , and also no good realtion with North Korea , had North Korea been greated with open arms they would have let go of their plans now they are also threatening

Planeman does excellent work but I question the effectiveness of 23mm, 35mm ackack against high altitude jets.

F117 was downed by low passive radars ? I think b52 are preety old now and most militaryies know how to counter them. But one thing can I ask of the miltary professionals how high do b52 would fly to hit SAM sites?
